Its crazy to believe that Space Channel 5 VR Kinda Funky News Flash! debuted as a tech demo years ago at TGS 2016 and now the official USA PlayStation YouTube account has posted a trailer for the game!
The trailer shows off some of the gameplay, which is a re-used stage from the previous game and includes the two new characters exclusive to this version of the game. The trailer also says that the Space Channel 5 VR will contain co-op, but didn’t go into gameplay details. If I had to bet, I would assume its the same type of multipler in the previous title where one person takes up and down and the other controls the left and right inputs. The other frustrating part is that the trailer still doesn’t give us a release date but I hope it makes it out before the end of the year since this year is Space Channel 5‘s 20th Anniversary.
Cool but why is Sony posting this and not SEGA on their own channel? I’m guessing this is the latest Sega franchise in a growing list to come along that has next to zero involvement with Sega themselves, just like;
* Shenmue III (Deep Silver)
* Bayonetta 2&3 (Nintendo)
* Monster Boy & CK (FDG Entertainment)
* Wonder Boy Dragons Trap remake (DotEmu)
* Streets of Rage 4 (GuardCrush)
and now
* Space Channel 5VR (Grounding)
The only things that are truly natively done 100% internally by Sega themselves is Yakuza, Sonic and now Judgement.
Everything else is outsourced with little to no Sega involvement or licences from other non-Sega internal studios.
SEGA is the publisher for Space Channel 5 VR. SEGA also does exclusive trailers with Sony when they do exclusive console titles, its networking. The Sony PlayStation YouTube channel have video games fans that might not follow SEGA. SEGA has quite a few Yakuza trailers just on the PlayStation YouTube channel. It isn’t that big of a deal.
Grounding Inc is the developer, they aren’t a publisher. SEGA is funding the development since they are the publisher. I agree on the other points though and I wish SEGA would publish Bayonetta 3 and Streets of Rage 4.

Sega IS developping many revivals (remember the new policy just started recently), many others are coming (Sega wouldn’t present to fans the revival poll at Sega Fes otherwise) and keep in mind you cannot say there is almost zero involvment from Sega for other titles.
Without the new policy those revivals wouldn’t be possible otherwise all the others publishers would have revivals every month. That’s not a thing.
Only Sega let those developpers and publishers release so many sequels.
It’s like the 80/90’s. Did you know that 80% of their IPs were outsourced at the time ?
i’ll take your examples: Wonder boy is Westone, Streets of Rage 2 and 3 are Ancient, even Shenmue received the help from Scarab and other companies…
Sega CANNOT develop all the requested games, not now, not during the glory day (Sega arcade games were outsourced on console very often, even published by other companies on Nes, PC Engine…)
Sega MUST NOT become a revival factory.
The situation is pretty balanced now, they release popular current games, old IPs, and fresh experiences. When they can handle too much old IPs they let talented companies doing the job (sometimes they refuse like Streets of Rage, Jet Set Radio PS3 cancelled games).
I don’t want 100% of revival games made by Sega. This was not Sega’s method before, they were right.
