Sonic should be edgy, that’s more geared towards being right than left, but it is what made him who he was and made him have that appeal and gave him his sense of ‘cool’ which was based on the mind map Sega used in the late 80s/early 90s for him as well as making him a personified characterisation of Sega itself as the face of the company. being more ‘funny’ could be an integral element of that, but not ‘cheesy funniness’, he should be funny in an edgy way, but it is still a facet of a more core edgy characterisation rather than simply being that for the sake of it.
Sonic should be able to balance both humor and heart. And when there are times when the story calls for it to be serious, Then be serious. While it wasn’t perfect, At least the japanese version of sonic x seemed to pull that off pretty well sometimes. The Ending of the second to last episode of season three in particular left me bawling my eyes out.. like iron giant tear jearkingly sad. Thankfully much like that movie the series did end on a pretty hopeful note. Especially for a certain two tail fox boy and his true star crossed forever love. if you know you know.
