It looks like Puyo Puyo Tetris is one of Sega’s biggest success stories of last year! Mizuki Hosoyamada of SEGA revealed on the Puyo Puyo Anniversary TV Show 2018 that the Nintendo Switch version of Puyo Puyo Tetris S will soon surpass over a million units worldwide, no doubt that when you combine the other versions of the game (Which also include but not limited to Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita) it’s already a million seller but to see one platform do so fantastically for the game must be a great source of joy for Sega. Hopefully with this news means that future Puyo releases are a lock for localisation, perhaps it might even be a good idea to try and come up with a way to port Puyo Puyo Chronicle onto the Switch? Either way, great news for Puyo fans!

Great news, though what this really shows me is that SEGA should have localized Puyo Puyo Tetris years ago. Either way, I’m loving the Switch version.
I agree. Sega should have released this in 2014 but I’m grateful that Atlus lead them to focusing on quality and making plans to bring more non Sonic games to the west
Was that the only news from the TV show?
Is Puyo Puyo to Sega now what Tetris was to Nintendo? In that they don’t actually own the IP but just the licence to use it.
It seems Columns was traditionally Sega’s answer to Tetris at the time but they’ve barely touched it since, now they’d rather use the Tetris name over their own Columns to promote Puyo Puyo.
Puyo Puyo IS a SEGA franchise. They only licensed Tetris for this game.
Being a ‘SEGA franchise’ doesn’t necessary make it a ‘SEGA IP’. Like the Yakuza series, we call it a ‘PlayStation franchise’ but PlayStation is only a platform and Sony does not own Yakuza, it only has Yakuza on their platform because SEGA want to use the PlayStation platform to promote it.
Also look at the classic Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, when Sega put that out, it was basically a re-skinned variation of another game in Japan that SEGA did not own, simply for the purpose that it was deemed too Japaneese for an American audience, and Europe got the same one simply because of the generally same localised language.
As Compile is not an actual SEGA studio, it seems more that Puyo Puyo is simply an outsourced licence that SEGA is the current owner of, rather than it being an actual SEGA IP like Columns is.
Compile no longer exists. SEGA bought the Puyo Puyo IP when Compile went under.
I bought it for Tetris, but am warming up to the Puyo Puyo modes. The story mode is very silly, so I hope more people are waking up to the franchise like I am.
It was a good call for SEGA to pair up with Tetris on this game.
All about personal choice, I prefer Puyo Puyo more than Tetris, I always thought Tetris seemed a bit more simplistic and bland by comparison, Puyo Puyo is more about combo mechanics which Tetris lacks because it goes it’s own way with a formula that’s just based more on lines.
Puyo Puyo just has more to it overall, more characters and plots too with generally brighter more vibrant colours, like Puyo Puyo Pop Fever on the Dreamcast – well worth getting.
And it has full English dubs and texts in the Japanese NTSC version which Sega put in the Dreamcast.
Tetris has combos as well. The vast majority of the top-rated Puyo Puyo Tetris players favour Tetris.
If you mean combos as in ‘stacking up multiple lines at the same time’, that’s not what I meant, I meant in the style of ‘sequential combos’ – which can only work with a colour coordination system of mechanics, unlike Tetris which uses a more simplistic wall to wall fill-in-the-gaps style.
It would’ve been nice had SEGA released the Vita version here in some form. I do have the PS4 version though. And damn, am I bad at Puyo Puyo.
