Sonic the Hedgehog 4 awesome update!

Today is the day! The much talked about, much speculated at day of Sonic 4 reckoning. It came in the form of a press release and a Sega rep will be revealed more info on ‘ON THE SPOT’ tonight.

According to this press release, the release date of Sonic 4 will be pushed back to the later half of 2010 to insure the high quality of the game.

To me, this sounds like great news! I can’t wait to scour forums after I publish this article to see the new and inventive ways nerdy Sonic fans can spin this news into a negative light.

Also mentioned on the press release, SEGA confirmed that Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I will be coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch via Apple’s iTunes App Store.

Hit the jump for the press release, also make sure to tune into ON THE SPOT for the second part of the reveal tonight!

SEGA is incredibly happy at the overwhelmingly positive response to Sonic The Hedgehog™ 4 Episode I from both press and fans around the world, and wants to ensure that we’re delivering the best Sonic experience possible.

With this dedication to quality and the Sonic experience in mind, SEGA has decided to extend the development of the game, and will now release Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I in the latter half of 2010. The additional time will allow the Development Team to focus on ensuring overall high-quality throughout the game by continuing to tune, balance, and maintain the kind of polish that an important title like this demands, and ultimately providing fans with an unrivalled classic Sonic feel.

SEGA is also pleased to confirm that Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I will be coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch via Apple’s iTunes App Store.

Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I is developed specifically for the download market and will be available via Microsoft XBLA, Sony PSN, Nintendo WiiWare and the iTunes App Store in late 2010.

There are two things bothering me in that press release.

Release date and new platform confirmed!

"Release date". I hope this has nothing to do with language barriers.

  2. I totally called the iPhone! I knew it! Wahaha! Nomad Junkyard gets more articles!

Regarding the delay, I'm split. I wanted to play this in June/July, but I'd prefer to play a better version late 2010.

Releasing it next to big, actual good major retail releases and stuff like PlayStation Move and Natal is literally the dumbest thing they could have done.

They never said an exact date. For all we know, late 2010 still means summer, just late summer i.e. after june but before November. Also, a $5-$10 DL title won't fail against bigger releases. Most folks who buy a Move/Natal won't blink an eye at a small DL game.

Releasing a casual game when 'casuals' are buying the platform is a bad idea?

That is what was said for every downloadable game released last winter, and the winter before that. People will be spending ALL of their money on the big games – This will not fail, but it would have done much better with it's original date. July was the perfect release schedule for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, but they messed even that up.

Yeah, because it worked so well for Age of Booty.

I know Sonic is a much bigger name and that it would succeed no matter what, my point is that this will only hurt what could have been…

    So

    Much

A victory for fan feedback. Who gives a fuck when they release it if the quality is there.

I see what Sega Uranus is saying, but I don't think there is much thunder to take away from the game, really – from what I know. Just look at what else is released in "latter half of 2010".

Personally, after watching the "leaks", I'm *very* glad they're extending the QA time. Those video footages made me uneasy.

One of the guys said "this will not be coming out this summer", so I think they mean *late*, late 2010. They could announce the date or more clear time frame at E3, probably.
