New Shinobi 3DS Trailer: Evil Rises

Check out this new footage from the upcoming Shinobi title. I have to say, not a bad trailer. Visually it definitely leans more on the level of the DS than the 3DS: a wasted opportunity to do something special with the franchise revival from a graphics standpoint. That said, I can’t deny that it features a pretty cool art style with what looks like some stylish story sequences.

Shinobi 3DS will be available in November exclusively for Nintendo’s 3D handheld.

Let me fill you in on Griptonite, since I’m guessing most of you didn’t play a lot of DS side-scrollers. Grip made a ton of old school side scrolling action games for the DS, including: Iron Man 2, X-Men Origins Wolverine, Assassin’s Creed 2, and Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. These games all had VERY tight controls and a high level of difficulty. They weren’t especially deep games, but I play through ’em because of the challenge and the variety of moves I was able to master. Could have passed as Genesis games. This game should have those same qualities, although with slightly updated graphics. They didn’t exactly push the 3DS hardware graphically, but it’s not bad to look at. One thing that worries me is the blocking mechanic. Parrying or whatever they call it. They had this same idea for Wolverine. He could block anything with his claws if you timed it right. Even missiles. I just thought it messed with the flow of the action. I like the faster pace. The devs said you could play this without blocking, to get the old school Shinobi feel. But I think that will put the difficulty up past “insane”.

I do not really like the look of the combat system, I would strongly prefer it was closer to a side scrolling shooter. I mean, the original practically invented the genre!

This would likely be the first game I would get if I were to buy a 3DS, though.
