Sonic Lost World: 3DS version gets online multiplayer, Wii U does not

In an interview with Nintendo News Report, Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka confirms that Sonic Lost World will have online multiplayer on the 3DS, but not on the Wii U.

“We’ll have different multiplayer modes on both Wii U and 3DS. On the Wii U, there’s booth cooperative and versus multiplayer. In cooperative play, Sonic will be using the Wii U GamePad and someone can be supporting Sonic in co-op with the Wii Remote. In versus mode, one player will be playing on the TV screen and the other player will be racing using the GamePad so you don’t have to have split screen. You both have your own screen and can race each other. The Wii U multiplayer is not on the Internet. It’s basically everyone sitting on the same couch. The 3DS for the first time we’re having 4-player versus racing over Wi-Fi and the Internet.” – Takashi Iizuka

Pretty intersting. What are your guys thoughts on the lack of online multiplayer on the console version? Does this effect your purchase? Do you even care about multiplayer in a Sonic game?

I don’t know anyone who would make their Sonic purchasing decision based around an online multiplayer mode.

    I might =D

Except I’m not expecting a phenomenal multiplayer mode, so unless the multiplayer looks amazing I’m not getting the 3DS version

Pretty weird how the 3DS version gets the online play when the Wii U has by far the better online system.

But yeah this isn’t on my list of things I particularly care about but, but it is ridiculous to me that a game with a multiplayer mode in 2013 would not have an Online option.

I’ve complained about SMB U’s lack of online multiplayer countless times, lol. Game should have had it.

In this case it’s definitely not a deal-breaker, it just puzzles me as to why a company would choose not to include a feature that does nothing but extend a game’s replay value…

  5. Nux says:

A developer has limited time and resources, and I doubt an online mode is particularly high on Sonic Team’s agenda. Sonic’s portable entries have had an online mode since Sonic Rush Adventure, so this isn’t exactly new.

Oddly enough, the quality of Dimps’s Sonic games has been decreasing ever since they started including this feature…

  6. Ben says:

I find it kind of unlikely that adding something like online play to the equation takes tons of development time…

I really don’t see the connection to online play and Dimps’ quality…though IMO I’ve found their level designs to be fairly overrated to begin with. And Sonic 4: Episode 1 didn’t have online play or multiplayer and….yeah.

I think you’re stretching to find a relation to online play and the quality of the game. If Dimps really is going downhill quality-wise I’d blame budget constraints, if anything. They’re basically being forced into Digital titles and handheld ports when they used to be given their own retail standalone Sonic titles….I’m sure that comes with budget cuts.

Anyway…not to harp on this lol because I really don’t personally care one way or the other about this game’s multiplayer. Like I said, I just think it’s pretty strange for a game being released in 2013 with a multiplayer component (and, by the way, Sega’s biggest franchise) not to feature online play.

You are a fucking idiot Ben

  8. Fares says:

    No ! I can’t play online in my Wii u but on my 3ds that’s awesome !
Really the Wii u doesn’t have online multi-player on New Super Mario Bros. u
Good I want to play single my friends do not have Nintendo consoles
Info : It was SEGA games don’t have online like Sonic 4 And the online mode used only for the consoles work online like Sonic adventure Dx
    Thanks to SEGA
