Sonic Team’s upcoming Sonic game to use ‘traditional look and mechanics’ (UPDATE)

SonicTeam

Update: Turns out that Iizuka didn’t say anything about Sonic Team’s next game in the 4Gamer interview. The quote below was taken from Softpedia’s article about the interview, in which the author likely speculated about their next Sonic game. It has been mentioned in previous interviews that Sonic Boom won’t replace the regular Sonic series, but nothing regarding what Sonic Team’s next game is like nor when it will be revealed. We at SEGAbits apologize for reporting on false info and wasting everyone’s time.

We already knew that Sonic Team was working on their own Sonic the Hedgehog and it was speculated that it would be shown off this year. Guess what? It seems that is correct. Below is from a interview with the Japanese website 4Gamer:

“At the moment, the core Sonic team at SEGA is working on a new title that will use the traditional look and mechanics of the series, which will get more details later during the year.

At the same time, Big Red Button, an entirely new studio, is working on a new version of the entire game universe, called Sonic Boom, which will use an entirely new aesthetic and is designed to accompany the delivery of a new range of toys and a new cartoon series.”

I wonder what Sonic Team considers ‘traditional’ seeing as how Sonic’s gameplay has changed a lot in the last 20 something years. Is two Sonic games this year too much?

If this Sonic game is another Nintendo exclusive, I may burn a Sonic doll at the stake, tired of Sonic being a console I so don’t want to own

  2. ZeMegaMan says:

Sounds good. Please, please, please, PLLLEASE, no more Solo Sonica! We’re tired of playing as just Sonic. At least have Tails playable for added replay value.

  3. Sharky says:

I really hope it plays something like Sonic Generations ‘modern sonic’ or Sonic Colours… I really believe they nailed the gameplay with those games. Seamless switching between 2D and 3D gameplay is the right direction for the series.

    “traditional look and mechanics”

go whole hog with the idea. Sonic 4 Episode 3 confirmed.

In all seriousness, it would seem reasonable to suggest a Sonic game is coming Christmas season. IIRC something like February and March are not the best months of game sales. Nov-Dec is obviously attractive

I can’t imagine they would release an additional Sonic title so close to Sonic Boom. I would assume this new title to be more of a winter 2015 release.

  5. Barry the Nomad says:

I think that Sonic Boom frees Sonic Team up from a LOT of the requests SEGA West usually lays on them.

  6. Centrale says:

Are there any two Sonic fans who would agree on what “traditional” means?

  7. KleytonGamer says:

I think Sonic has everything to be an extremely epic game, it is necessary to change many things in the game, many things yet.

  8. Sonic Gender Excursion Bender as New Sonic Game after Sonic Boom

  9. AccelBlue says:

I would gladly pay for to sonic games in 1 year, you know what they say “the more the merrier”

  10. Steven says:

I think this would be a late 2015 release if they don’t rush the development. Also considering that they finished Sonic Lost World just last October, a 2.5 year development cycle seems likely if they want to make something great, time seems to be something they don’t manage well, give them time and they will make something spectacular lets hope 🙂
