SEGA Japan have finally given a specific date as to when their free-to-play online game, Phantasy Star Online 2 will hit the Playstation 4. That date is April 20. Right now SEGA will accept 50,000 beta testers between January 25 and February 15.
SEGA will also repackage the game with the upcoming ‘Reborn: Episode 4‘ content update and release it in retail for the PS4, PS Vita and PC. Those that pay ¥4,990 ($43) will get a variety of in-game items.
As for a Western release, SEGA has already said they have no plans on bringing Phantasy Star Online 2 outside of Japan. Which led us to write a decent rebuttal here. So tell us if any of you are planning on importing the game or give us your two cents on the whole ‘no Phantasy Star Online 2 outside of Japan’ issue in the comments below!

I think the anime series will suffice my deprived N.A. PSO2 release needs, thank you very much! ;p
First month of the new year and they barely announced anything but this. Why people still have faith in SEGA I don’t know.
And with that comment, you’ve officially overstayed your troll residency here at SEGAbits.
Longer than I expected
This game? Lol sega whut? Waiting and waiting. Its gonna be a decade soon i tell ya. Dont hold your breath. You will surely die
Well there’s a way to play the Japanese version, since there’s a tweaker that has most of the stuff you need to do in game is translated.
I went back to playing it again because of the anime and translation are much better than when I played years ago 😀
Yeah a lot of people dont know this. Ive been playing it for a long time and honestly think its quite a mess
I’ll be returning to the Japanese version once this is out on the ps4 – i liked it a lot but I never felt at home playing Phantasy Star on PC…
I just don’t get it. You know, it’s things like this that make me doubt things like this: http://segabits.com/blog/2015/07/07/sega-japan-ceo-talks-about-earning-gamers-trust-learning-from-atlus-and-focusing-on-quality-titles/
You know what would earn my trust? Release an already well-received game that already has an official English translation to a group of people that have stuck with said game series for decades.
Headline should say, “Players with Japanese PSN accounts” instead of “Japanese players”. No region-lock = we all can play this, much easier than the region locked PC versions that require way more hoops to jump through.
I’m looking quite forward to this myself, as I’ve had a JP account in addition to my NA for ones, and played Onigiri’s JP version when I first got my PS4 – it’s super easy to do. The language of MMO’s is universal! See “!” above people’s heads? Go talk to them. Follow arrows and marks on minimaps to get to objectives. Kill everything to move forward. The hardest part is remembering “Circle” is “Yes/Confirm” and “X” is ” Back/Deny” in Japanese games, tbh.
Anyone interested in PSO2 still has no excuse not to give this a try 🙂
