SEGA has officially unveiled the trailer for SEGA Genesis Classics (SEGA Mega Drive Classics in Europe) and have revealed some of the in-game features. The collection will include over 50 classic games along with enhanced features like Rewind, Mirror Mode and visual filters. The official site, megadriveclassics.com, has yet to go live but it can be assumed that is where the full list of games will be included. The collection is releasing physically to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on May 29th, and as an added incentive will include a double sided poster. Thankfully, SEGA seems to realize the Genesis can stand on its own and does not need Sonic’s name tacked on to the title, like they did with Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection in 2009.

No Sonic 3! No Sonic 3? No Sonic 3!
And no Sonic & Knuckles too…
Yay and who cares. The video is way cooler than the announcement. *snore
Yeah no Sonic 3 & Knuckles that’s what I was thinking. Thunderforce IV I would love. It would also be cool if they included some Sega CD and 32X games in these collections as well as some more Japanese exclusives. Overall great collection though. I hope the emulation quality and options are good.
Thunderforce are great games yes
I think I’ll pass on this release, because Sega has released most if not all of these Genesis / Mega Drive games in past compilations. They don’t seem to care about many of their arcade titles like the original System 18 arcade version of Shadow Dancer, Alien Storm and Clutch Hitter or System 32 games like Out Runners, Clutch Hitter, Arabian Fight and Golden Axe The Revenge of Death Adder. The list goes on and on. Sega is beyond lazy.
But most of the game are already on PC…
I’m kind of surprised by the lack of Technosoft games, honestly. They own those licenses, so it seems like a bit of a waste. The Thunder Force series seems like way more of a unit shifter than Bio-Hazard Battle (though both are great, obviously), and Herzog Zwei would fill a genre gap nicely. I guess bridges were burnt with Ed Annunziata enough that Ecco is off the table now, which makes it hard to see this collection as comprehensive. I can only guess that Michael Jackson-based royalty issues are getting in the way of Sonic 3 & Knuckles showing up.
Given the last few releases like this I expect there’ll be unlockables which will help, but this just seems unnecessary. Especially on PC.
Anyone wish sega would make a dream cast collection.
