The Sonic movie Twitter account has officially named the date for the third film, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 set for a December 20, 2024 release date in North America. The announcement was timed with the home video release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which hits 4K Ultra HD, blu-ray and DVD today.
Some fans have voiced frustration with Sonic 3 having a release date while the upcoming game Sonic Frontiers still sits in that loose Holiday release date range. Fans need to realize, however, that movies and video games operate very differently when it comes to release date announcements. Games often do not have a date in place until 3-4 months before release, whereas movie studios will typically plant their flag in a distant spot on the calendar. It’s just how the different industries operate and is not a sign of one piece of Sonic media struggling.
it is worth pointing out that Idris Elba is set to reprise Knuckles in a Paramount+ series, which should release before Sonic 3 and might introduce characters and plot points for the upcoming film.
