Transformers: Human Alliance arcade cabinet unboxing

DCIM101MEDIA
SEGA’s next big arcade game in the West is ‘Transformers: Human Alliance’ which the guys over at Arcade Heroes got an unboxing of! Seems that SEGA is throwing in quite a nice promotional packages for stores that purchase the latest cabinet.

” I have to say that this is the first time I have been impressed with marketing materials to be provided with a brand new arcade game. Usually you get…nothing. On rare occasion you might get something like a poster but nothing like what comes with every single Transformers arcade machine. Kudos to Sega for giving arcade ops something more akin to what movie theaters get to promote new releases.”

Persona Q influenced by Etrian Odyssey’s dungeon mapping and combat

Famitsu

When Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth was announced, it seemed like it would take aspects of the Atlus’ Nintendo DS long running dungeon crawler Etrian Odyssey and according to this week’s Famitsu, I was partly right. They have now said that the game will feature a map-making feature similar to the one featured in Etrian Odyssey games. This map feature will allow users to draw the layout of the dungeon on the 3DS touch screen and help you find your way around.

That isn’t all though, the game will also contain ‘F.O.E.’ monsters and give you a choice if it you are better off running or allow you to ‘try’ and take down the monster. If you do decide to take do F.O.E. monsters, you might just get a special reward.

So Persona Q is Etrian Odyssey with a Persona storyline and characters from Persona 3 & 4. Persona Q is set to come out in America this fall.

Nintendo pulls the plug on online features for Wii and DS games

ps0
Nintendo of America has just announced that as of May 20th, you will no longer have access to WiFi connection service on their Wii, DS and DSi games. That will include features like online play, online leaderboards and anything else that it does online. All games will work perfectly fine online.

Honestly this move makes me more weary of Nintendo and actually makes me reconsider the idea of buying a Wii U. I know most people will post and say that I’m overreacting, saying not many people play DS titles online, but it sucks knowing that if we make a party on our forums to play Phantasy Star Ø, as of May 20th, we won’t be able to play online just because Nintendo decided they didn’t want to support online services going on to the next generation.

To see all SEGA games that will be affected, hit the jump.

Shinji Mikami agrees: Aladdin on the Genesis is better than SNES

dealwithit
When I was a kid there was much debate between my friends on which version of Aladdin was better, the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive version by SEGA or the SNES version by Capcom. Its hard to pick, considering I was gifted the SNES one as a child while my cousin got it on the SEGA Genesis. I have played it growing up on both consoles and I will state that the SEGA Genesis version is superior. What about Shinji Mikami  (Resident Evil, Vanquish), he worked on the game, does he agree? I guess so.

“If I didn’t actually make [the SNES game], I would probably buy the Genesis one. Animation-wise, I think the Genesis version’s better. The Genesis version had a sword, actually. I wanted to have a sword.” – Shinji Mikami tells Polygon

So, what about you SEGA gamers? Which one is your favorite version of Aladdin?

SEGA Genesis RPG Pier Solar HD coming to the Nintendo 3DS? [Update: Game delayed to April]

pshd_ks1280set_0

We already know the guys behind the remake of the SEGA Genesis RPG from 2010, Pier Solar, want to bring the title to many platforms including the Dreamcast and the Wii U this Spring. According to the developer Watermelon, they could end up putting it on the Nintendo 3DS as well.

“On Wii U, we’re definitely putting the second screen to good use, a feature that will be exclusive of that platform. Well, maybe not for long if we end up making it to the 3DS, but that’s for later.” – Watermelon Presiden Tulio Goncalves

Pier Solar HD is also coming out for PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Android, Ouya and lastly the SEGA Dreamcast. Yeah, its going to be hard to miss!

It should also be noted that a recent tweet from the team confirmed that the game has been delayed from a March release to April.

Total War: Rome II fans enraged at SEGA for including cut pre-alpha content as paid DLC

Creative Assembly is in the lime light with fans once again for its new premium DLC, as it allegedly includes content that was cut from the game’s pre-release version.

Gamers are saying that he Camel Cataphract units featured in the DLC Beasts of War pack was originally shown in a Let’s Play video that was produced by Creative Assembly before the game came out. This video also showed the Mercenary Naked Swords unit which wasn’t in the base game either and was released later in the Caesar in Gaul DLC.

“At the time of this video’s recording, these units were not finished in terms of art, gameplay or design and as a marketing team we should have double-checked the likelihood of them making it into the final game. Obviously we don’t want to feature content that won’t be in the game intentionally, especially when it would otherwise be pointless, as in this case where there was a huge variety of other great units to show off. That’s our basic human error and I apologize for letting that through. [The units] weren’t working pre-launch in the sense that they were finished, being largely placeholder and subject to change. However, I completely appreciate that this sounds like a ‘get out’ on a technicality to a fan feeling aggrieved by this, so again I do apologize for not thoroughly checking enough that all content in that video was absolutely ready for public viewing and understanding. We’ve put checks in place now that should prevent that in the future.” – Total War brand director Rob Bartholomew

This isn’t the first issue the game has had with long time fans; this entry has been one of the more highly criticized titles in the franchise, though it remains a powerhouse seller for SEGA.

Has SEGA lost the trademark for Shenmue? [Updated]

RyoHaz
Weird the way things happen? In one month from today, March 19th, Yu Suzuki will take the stage at GDC to talk about Shenmue, Ryo Hazuki has made his return to SEGA’s All-Stars Racing games and now SEGA loses the trademark for the franchise in the USA? Seems like a step back for fans and it seems to be true.

According to the trademark page, the reason they dropped the trademark was “because registrant did not file an acceptable declaration under Section 8.” So what is Section 8? You can read it all here, but the whole thing revolves around SEGA not coming with a ‘declaration’ on why they should keep it and why they haven’t been making commercial uses of it. Though, I think this is a mistake since SEGA technically is making ‘use’ of the franchise with his appearances in recent games and even merchandise. I have a feeling this trademark issue is something SEGA is already working on fixing.

Update: It should be noted that the database shows two dead trademarks for Shenmue. One, filed on February 18, 1999 and cancelled on January 17, 2009, pertains to “computer game programs and prerecorded discs and ROMs for computer game programs”. This is likely referring to the original Shenmue for the SEGA Dreamcast.

The one that was cancelled on Valentine’s Day pertains to “entertainment services, namely, providing an online computer game”. This one was filed on August 25, 2003. The now cancelled Shenmue Online was officially announced in 2004, meaning this recent dead trademark is likely for that game and the potential for games like it.

Yakuza Restoration on the PS3 will have “a little bonus” for fans

yakuzaps3

The guys over at Siliconera recently spoke to Yakuza producer and all around tan man Toshihiro Nagoshi about the differences between Yakuza Restoration on the Playstation 3 vs the Playstation 4. He stated the the game will only differ visually since the Playstation 4 has 10x more power than the Playstation 3. He stated they have always intended for this title to be a launch game on Playstation 4 and worked hard in getting it ready.

Even though the Playstation 3 version won’t have as smooth framrate or fancy effects like the Playstation 4 version, it will have a ‘a little bonus’ for fans that have save data from previous Yakuza games. Not bad, right? Demo for Yakuza Restoration is now on the Japanese PSN store, game comes out over there on February 22nd. No Western release plans have been announced.

New Shining video game is an arcade fighting game, check out the trailer

Today SEGA announced the latest entry in the Shining franchise, Blade Arcus from Shining, a 2D arcade fighting game. Tony Taka, the man responsible for most of the franchise’s character designs of the last decade, has returned to design the characters for this game. I’m disappointed by this bit of news, as I don’t care for his work in the franchise.

The game will feature characters from Shining Blade, like Sakuya and Rage, as well as least two new characters. Blade Arcus from Shining is set to come out this summer in Japan.
