Sonic Boom E3 Wii U and 3DS trailers arrive

Official trailers for Sonic Boom on Wii U and 3DS have arrived. Lyric, the new villain for the franchise, has been broken out of whatever prison was holding him and says he has unfinished business with Sonic who seems to not have any idea what he’s talking about as this is their first encounter. Graphics look much better than recent footage shown, which may indicate that it was an earlier build that we’ve previously seen. You can also out the 3DS trailer after the break.

We’ll have more coverage of Sonic Boom as me and Nuckles87 get our hands on the game later today!

Original Bayonetta game and Nintendo Costumes to be included with Bayonetta 2

Screen Shot 2014-06-10 at 12.29.33 PM

In a string of trailers shown during Nintendo’s Digital press event, a new trailer for Bayonetta 2 was shown. In it, we can see that the main story seems to be about Bayonetta going to hell to rescue a friend. However, the big surprise is that not only will you get the original Bayonetta game included, but Bayonetta will have new costumes based on Nintendo franchises such as Metroid and Zelda. It’s hard to tell from the trailer, but it seems to be limited to the original Bayonetta. I may be wrong about it though, but we’ll have more info and will update this post as more news on Bayonetta 2 arrives this week.

After the break, check out a gallery of screengrabs from Bayonetta for Wii U.

Sonic Boom heading to New York, no Summer of Sonic this year

sonicboom2014

Start spreading the news! Sonic Boom will be heading to New York on October 4th. Along with this news from Sega comes the sad news that Summer of Sonic will be on hiatus for this year. This is very sad news for Sonic fans in the U.K. who’ve come in droves year after year to the event. One bit of good news is that Summer of Sonic has inspired other, smaller Sonic conventions to appear such as Weston Super Sonic (returning on January 17 2015) and Sonic Revolution in Buena Park (on June 15 2014). Read on for a statement from both Summer of Sonic and Sega.

IMPORTANT UPDATE! SEGA’s video game ports on Amazon’s Fire TV are a bit disappointing

amazon_fire_tv

IMPORTANT UPDATE: It ends up the Ouya controller WAS the problem of my control woes as I got the Fire Controller from Amazon today and I can say that Crazy Taxi works just fine on it. The drive/reverse buttons are in their proper place and we have brakes! The gas and brakes or on the R and L triggers respectfully, so while still not that comfortable, work much, much better than before. I owe an apology to Sega for blasting their port when it was poor bluetooth controller support that was the main culprit.

Last week, I picked up the new Fire TV as a mini console for my living room. I like the idea of playing some mobile games on a full blown console but sadly, the Ouya just wasn’t what I wanted out in that regard. Fire TV solves that by not only having a ton of video apps, but much more popular mobile games rather than the overload of weak indy games the Ouya consists of. Very fun games like Asphalt 8, Rayman Fiesta Run and Riptide 2 occupy a decent launch library. Those games include some of Sega’s more popular titles. I tried out four of the eight Sega games available and sadly, the porting of those titles from seems to not have gone over as well as hoped. My impressions after the jump.

SEGA’s launch lineup for Amazon Fire TV

amazon-fire-tv-pricing
Amazon’s new Roku/Ouya killer Fire TV was announced yesterday with a lineup of software partners including SEGA themselves. We didn’t really know what the lineup of games were until the system got shipped to the public today. Here’s Sega’s list of games along with their prices.

  • Sonic CD ($2.99)
  • Sonic 1 ($2.99)
  • Sonic 2 ($2.99)
  • Sonic 4 Episode 1 ($3.99)
  • Sonic 4 Episode 2 ($4.99)
  • Crazy Taxi ($4.99)
  • The Cave ($4.99)
  • Virtua Tennis Challenge ($4.99)

Since the Amazon Fire TV doesn’t make use of Google services, some of the games won’t have Google Play Achievements or use Google’s leaderboards. That will also mean that Sonic 2 doesn’t have multiplayer since it used Google’s services. According to Taxman, the developer, Sonic 2 won’t even have a splitscreen mode due to ‘the projects scope’. The Amazon Fire TV is already shipping and you can purchase on here. Gaming controller sold separately.

Sonic Talk #26: Genesis with SEGA’s Aaron Webber

[MP3] (iTunes Link coming soon)

Now with 100% more of Sega’s beloved Aaron Webber! In this months Sonic Talk Aaron, Shigs, Nuckles87 and Sonic Revolutions’ own Shayne Edwards discuss the Genesis Era of Sonic. Games include Sonic 1-3 and Knuckles, Sonic Spinball, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Sonic 3-D Blast, Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix. We also go into what makes Eggman tick and more!

CONTEST TIME! Listen in on this episode for a Sonic trivia question. Be the FIFTH person to answer (and answer correctly) to win an AtGames Sega Genesis (which I reviewed here the other day) with Street Fighter II and a Sega 6-Pack cartridge. Yeah, yeah. It’s not a great prize, but it’s better than nothing.

RULES: Be the fifth person to answer to win. Why fifth? I want more people to listen of course! If there is not a fifth person to answer, then the very first person will win the system and carts. Winner must join the Segabits forums and PM me their address. U.S. CITIZENS ONLY (I can’t afford the U.K. postage. Sorry.)

Hardware Review: AtGames Sega Genesis 60-in-1

IMG_0015[1]

The old adage “You get what you pay for” tends to hold true more often than not. After all, if you’re in a Walgreens pharmacy you’re probably not looking to buy a video game console. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the AtGames Sega Genesis is a poor quality console. At $30, it’s pretty tempting, but buyer beware there is some drawbacks to this system. Read on to find out if it’s worth your gas money for this cheaply produced retro console and find out how you can win it!

Tommy Tallarico to be special guest at Sonic Revolution

Tommy-T

Composer of many Sega Genesis games, contributor to Sonic and the Black Knight soundtrack and co-founder of Video Games LIVE!, Tommy Tallarico has just been announced as a special guest at Sonic Revolution on June 15. Tommy will be discussing his work and will be answering questions for the fans. Sonic Revolution posted the following on their Facebook status.

We’re proud to announce that composer Tommy Tallarico of Video Games Live fame will be a special guest at our event. Mr. Tallarico will be talking about his work with Sonic music (he was one of the contributors to Sonic and the Black Knight’s soundtrack) as well as video game music in general. The audience will be more than welcome to ask him questions!

“Sonic Revolution” Sonic fan convention announced for June 15th

SonicRevolution

You may remember hearing of a small Sonic fan gathering in Orange County last year called “Sonic Boom West Chapter”. It was put together by several So Cal Sonic fans including Tanner Bates who you may have heard on our latest episode of Sonic Talk. It was during that gathering that the plans for Sonic Revolution was put in it’s early stages. Since then, I’ve become a part of this group and have helped (a little) in bringing Sonic Revolution into a full fledged convention.

The Sonic Revolution convention has now been announced for Sunday, June 15 at the Holiday Inn at Buena Park, California (close to Disneyland). While we’re still gathering more guests for the event (Sonic Boom producer Stephen Frost has shown interest), so far we have the producers of the upcoming fan film Sonic prologue coming in with an exclusive clip and a Q&A. Also, Sonic cover band Serenity Seven will be on hand for music. There will also be an artists alley you can register a booth (for free) and giveaways and more prizes.

Tickets will be available (for free) March 1st. For more info and to keep up with new information, check out the event page on Facebook here.

Classic SEGA Ads: “Take my Congo Bongo…..please!”

Back in 1983, Sega released Congo Bongo in arcades as Sega’s isometric answer to Donkey Kong. The game had you playing a man on safari chasing a giant gorilla through several levels. However, due to the isometric nature of the game, it made it very challenging. The game was soon released on all popular gaming platforms of the early to mid 80’s so of course, a commercial was made to sell the game. The comedian you hear in the ad is the very famous Henny Youngman who made a career out of zippy one liners such as “Take my wife…please!” and is a much funnier comedian than what’s shown in this commercial. Sonic Talk #25 “We’re gonna need more sports tape.”

[ MP3 Download ] [ iTunes ]

Now with 100% more Mike Pollock! Yes, we got Dr. Eggman himself in an interview later in the show. In the meantime, we got five, count’em FIVE folks on the podcast with the clearest audio we’ve ever had. (Goodbye Skype recorder and good riddance.) Our main focus of this episode is the very recent announcement of Sonic Boom. Me, Alex, and Ben of SEGAbits, along with GX Echidna and Tanner Bates delve deep into our personal feelings on this new redesign of our favorite hedgehog and pals.

WARNING! After the Mike Pollock interview, I accidentally lost the last 20 minutes of my voice from the podcast, but I edited it so you can still hear the others (just expect some jarring changes in subject.)

Big Sonic Event in New York later today

sonicboom

Looks like Machinima let the cat out of the bag early and accidentally posted an invitation poster on one of their youtube videos (although I’m not under embargo, I’m not showing it out of respect for Sega). The event promises “2014 will mark a renaissance for Sonic the Hedgehog” and shows a poster of the silhouetted images from the Sonic Boom teaser. It’s also states that Sega will make new announcements and plans for the Sonic brand. From what was shown on the poster, we can already guess it has to deal with Sonic Boom but will new game announcements be involved as well? Also, the use of the word “renaissance” has me a little worried. They wouldn’t be going all out if this wasn’t something really Big.

The presentation will start at 12:30EST and they’ll be interviews after at 1:20.

RUMOR: Atlus to bring Yakuza 5 to the West! [UPDATE]

Update: Barry here. We have a bit of more news regarding this rumor. While EGM says one thing, a NeoGAF member says another. User jschreier shared the following:

I just asked a couple Atlus USA folks and they haven’t heard anything about this. FWIW. Seems pretty unlikely to me – they’re not a big company and they just announced like 4 new Persona games.

Original story: According to the latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Q-Mann (that’s their rumor guy) states that Atlus may be currently working on localizing Yakuza 5 to the West. With news of Sega giving Atlus some free reign when it comes to their IP’s and Atlus having a great localization team, this doesn’t seem so far fetched. Am I hyped? Check above the comments section and see.

Arcade Review: Dream Raiders

One of the newest entries in Sega’s arcade lineup, Dream Raiders has just arrived at my local arcade (Round 1 in Puente Hills which houses a lot of Sega games and Sega owned UFO catchers) and is attracting quite a few arcade goers. But is your short time with Dream Raiders worth the price of admission or is it all ride and no game?

“GO DANCE” in the new year with a new Sega iOS game

Just in time to dance in the new year, Sega presents GO DANCE on iOS devices. Working a lot like the Just Dance series of games, GO DANCE uses your iOS devices camera to track your dance movements as you groove to artists like Flo Rida and Niki Minaj or if you have actual musical taste, there are some Sega tunes thrown in as well including four from Jet Set Radio. GO DANCE is a free game app (with microtransactions of course) and is available on iTunes now.
