Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Classics now available for Linux and Mac – featuring Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Ecco games

Following the console release of Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Classics, SEGA has quietly released the collection to Linux and Mac. The game is also available for Windows. The collection features the same features as the console releases, meaning the new multiplayer and challenge modes have been added. Interestingly, this version features more games than the console release. Most notable is the inclusion of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, though it is unknown if the games are available without lock-on. Also included are the three Ecco games, Eternal Champions and Sonic CD. The inclusion of these games are one major drawback to the console release, and it’s nice to see them included here though it does call into question what legal stipulations are holding back these games on home console.

UPDATE: I installed the hub on my Mac and it runs smoothly however it looks like Sonic CD is Windows only and launches separately as it has in the past. It does not appear within the collection.

Now, with SEGA Amusements sharing information on the game, it looks like western fans won’t have to wait long to play the game for themselves!

Wal-Mart leaks ‘Team Sonic Racing’ on Nintendo Switch early, includes first screenshots and info

It seems that the rumors are all coming true with SEGA moving forward with a Sonic only racing game, it seems that this time it will be called ‘Team Sonic Racing‘. At least according to this Wal-Mart listing. So far the game has only been found for the Nintendo Switch (we haven’t found a listing for other consoles yet), costing $39.96, according to the product page.

We also have these screenshots below, showing off that our heroes are driving actual cars and not Mario style karts. It also seems that the title might be a play on Crash Team Racing or maybe it has to do with Sonic Teams development name? Team Sonic Racing seems to take ques from the past ‘SEGA All-Stars Racing‘ games by having unlockables and upgrades for your vehicles. The game is also set to offer 12 players per race, 4 player split-screen and a offline ‘Team Adventure mode’. Find out more after the break:

Nagoshi says Yakuza 3, 4 and 5 remasters are for new overseas fans, confirms no cut content

In a recent streaming broadcast discussing the upcoming Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4 and Yakuza 5 remasters for PlayStation 4, SEGA’s chief creative officer Toshihiro Nagoshi revealed new information about the genesis of the remasters. According to Nagoshi, the remasters are intended for new overseas fans. Following the release of Yakuza 0, the franchise has seen a renaissance outside Japan with latest title Yakuza 6: The Song of Life being the biggest US launch in the series’ history. So it only made sense to fill the gap between Yakuza Kiwami 2 and Yakuza 6.

Also revealed in the video, Nagoshi states that there will not be cut content in the remasters, which is great news for those who played the PS3 originals outside Japan. Check out the full video here, and in the comments below share your thoughts on the news!

SEGA Genesis Classics releases today for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One – Check out the crazy launch trailer

SEGA Genesis ClassicsSEGA Mega Drive Classics for those in Europe – releases today for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. To celebrate the launch, SEGA has released a bizarre video from Eclectic Method which mashes up various assets from the 50+ games included in the collection. The collection itself is a console port of the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive Classics Hub which released to Steam back in 2016.

We reviewed the Steam release back when it launched, which you can read here, and plan to review the newly released SEGA Genesis Classics once we get a copy in our hands. Unfortunately SEGA hasn’t sent us an advance copy to preview and review (though they oddly sent a ton out to several low to mid-tier YouTubers). If SEGA is reading this, we have a YouTube show going on a channel that is doing pretty well for itself. So, you know, don’t forget about us next time please.

If you want to pick up a copy for yourself, and support SEGAbits, you can order the PlayStation 4 version here and the Xbox One version here.

Unboxing: SEGA Games On Atari 2600

On this kind-of unboxing we take a look at some SEGA releases for the Atari 2600 from the early 80s, before the Master System hit the scene. SEGA really went all out when it came to the packaging and presentation of some of these titles, and photos just don’t do them justice. A majority of these games come from Gremlin Industries, which was purchased by SEGA in the late 70s and released games under SEGA/Gremlin and SEGA Electronics until 1984. Such classics to come out of this include Congo Bongo, Monaco GP, Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator and Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom.

Here is the Japanese release schedule for the other titles.

SEGA and PUMA Sonic the Hedgehog sneaker collaboration hits stores June 5

SEGA has sent us a bunch of images showing off the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog sneaker collaboration between PUMA and SEGA. Set to hit stores June 5, 2018 and priced at $130, the sneakers come in two designs: one inspired by Sonic and another inspired by Eggman. There are several little details in the shoes, which can be seen in the gallery after the break and in the following descriptions from Puma:

The RS-0 Sonic takes cues from Sonic the Hedgehog and the areas he protects, including the iconic Green Hill Zone. The upper is made from a textured suede reminiscent of Sonic’s trademark blue fur while the striking red outsole stands for his shoes. Take a closer look and you’ll see more familiar color hints from the beloved game – from classic gold rings, to the lush green grass that he speeds on. The upper also features micro ventilation perforations, embroidered PUMA Formstrip, deboss of Sonic’s head and gold rings. Metallic gold rings once again appear on lace ends relating to the classic gold rings collected in the video game. The story continues on the mid and insole with checkered print nostalgic to the retro video game. 16-bit grass print on heel is a nod to the Green Hill Zone. Outsole features translucent red rubber and a Sonic logo under print. Finally, the tongue label features the collaboration logo and RS-0 binary number branding.

The PUMA x SEGA RS-0 Dr. Eggman take cues from Sonic the Hedgehog’s archnemesis, from his flashy outfit to the black and yellow caution stripes from his Eggmobile represented by the sneaker’s all-over red upper and footbed. The upper is decked in a pebbled patent leather with micro ventilation perforations, a debossed PUMA Formstrip, and a debossed Dr. Eggman head that shoots fireballs from his Eggmobile. His conniving face and fireballs are debossed on the medial heel, while gold rings, have been inserted on the lace. The footbed features black and yellow caution stripes – nod to the graphics on Eggman’s Eggmobile. Metallic outsole and caution stripes take design cues from his scientific machinery. Outsole features translucent blue rubber and Sonic logo under print, the exact color referenced from Dr. Eggman’s glasses. Tongue label features the collaboration logo and RS-0 binary number branding. Both sneakers are packaged a special box that inspired by the iconic Green Hill Zone.

Share your thoughts on the designs in the comments below, and let us know if you will be picking up a pair!
