RGG’s New Virtua Fighter Project – Battle System & Gameplay Rules Revealed At Tokyo Game Show

SEGA & RGG unveiled new information on the battle system and gameplay rules for the brand-new entry in the “Virtua Fighter” series, the New VIRTUA FIGHTER Project. Additionally, an archive of the Tokyo Game Show presentation is available to view, including a short teaser of the game.

This game offers two distinct battle rules to suit different playstyles and preferences:

  • Standard: Victory is determined by either depleting the opponent’s health or causing a ring out. By default, matches are won by taking 3 rounds.

  • Uprising: A completely new battle rule that introduces dynamic momentum-shifting opportunities, offering a new gameplay concept that stands apart from standard rules.

The game also features three groundbreaking battle systems that drive the evolution of the series:

  • Break & Rush: This innovative system introduces a dynamic damage accumulation mechanic. As specific regions of the body take repeated hits, damage builds up, eventually allowing for a targeted break. Once the attacker lands a break attack, they gain a strategic advantage, opening up new offensive opportunities. A ”broken” status carries over across rounds, creating a tactical layer that adds depth and tension to every match.

  • Stunner & Stun Combo: Introducing a new strike technique called the “Stunner,” this system unlocks a fresh combo mechanic that emphasizes fluidity and realism, without requiring complex inputs.

  • Flow Guard: A stylish new defensive mechanic, the Flow Guard system emphasizes fluid motion and visual flair. Working in tandem with the Break & Rush system, it introduces dynamic shifts in offense and defense across a variety of combat situations.

We also got another small glimpse of the new character towards the end of the presentation. Could it be a new protagonist for New Virtua Fighter Project’s story mode? Let us know your thoughts on the presentation below!

SEGA Announces Second Virtua Fighter Direct for May 11

SEGA is set to host the second Virtua Fighter Direct live stream this Sunday, May 11, at 10 AM EDT / 7 AM PST, promising fresh updates on the legendary 3D fighting series.

The first VF Direct, held back in December following The Game Awards, focused on the reveal of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. (Ultimate Showdown Ver. 2.0) for consoles and PC. That event gave longtime fans a glimpse at the franchise’s next evolution while teasing what’s to come for Virtua Fighter’s future.

Earlier this year, SEGA showcased a brief concept video of the next Virtua Fighter title during Nvidia’s CES 2025 presentation, illustrating the visual leap from the original 1999-era graphics to the capabilities of today’s hardware—further proof that development is well underway.

Hints of a new Virtua Fighter game were first dropped last year when SEGA’s head of transmedia, Justin Scarpone, mentioned it during an interview as part of the company’s broader push to revive its classic franchises.

A Closer Look At New Virtua Fighter Project With Pre-Development Footage

NVIDIA CEO, Jensen Huang showcased a demostration of the new Virtua Fighter Project during the CES2025 keynote speech presentation. The footage however is just a pre-development concept video for demonstration purposes, not actual gameplay. Regardless, it looks stunning and shows how the new VF entry would play out once the game officially releases.

We can see good look at an aged Akira fighting against himself in a mirror match in different outfits demonstrating realistic combat in the city which can be described as “a hotbed of vice, attracts both the wicked and desperate with destructible environments.

Despite this being just a concept video, the New Virtua Fighter Project is shaping up nicely and we’re excited to see more updates in the future from RGG Studio. What are your thoughts on what was shown in the footage. Let us know in the comments!
