When I reviewed 2017’s Sonic Mania, I praised it as being the best 2D Sonic game in decades. Now, a year later, SEGA is releasing a new version of the game dubbed Sonic Mania Plus. This definitive edition answers fan demand for a physical release while adding gameplay tweaks, expanded multiplayer, a new mode and two additional playable characters. Typically a reviewer would take this moment to pose the question: “So does Sonic Mania stand up one year later and are the new additions worthy of a double dip or DLC download?”, but I’ll just let you know right now that the answers are “yes” and “yes”. Sonic Mania Plus is everything that made the original Sonic Mania great, and more.

On this kind-of unboxing we take a look at some SEGA releases for the Atari 2600 from the early 80s, before the Master System hit the scene. SEGA really went all out when it came to the packaging and presentation of some of these titles, and photos just don’t do them justice. A majority of these games come from Gremlin Industries, which was purchased by SEGA in the late 70s and released games under SEGA/Gremlin and SEGA Electronics until 1984. Such classics to come out of this include Congo Bongo, Monaco GP, Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator and Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom.

The Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account recently held a poll asking fans what their favorite Sonic game feature was. Among the choices was the chao garden, which ended up winning in a landslide. Given Sonic Forces came and went with a mixed response, it’s interesting that SEGA is now asking such a question. On this SEGA News Bits, we share our thoughts on the original chao gardens, what this poll could mean and what SEGA could do to update them.
