While 2016 didn’t see many, if any, true big budget blockbuster titles from SEGA, there were still several great games to be found. SEGA Retrospective: 20 years of Fighters Megamix

Between the likes of Marvel vs Capcom, Super Smash Bros and NEO GEO Battle Coliseum, suffice to say that it is characteristic of the crossover fighting game sub-genre to not take yourself so seriously. Put any worries about canon to rest, don’t sweat character balance too much, and just have a good time. SEGA’s one and only foray into the world of crossover fighters dropped twenty years ago today, and if it’s not immediately obvious that they’ve let their hair down, it will be once you unlock Rent-A-Hero.

Fighters Megamix bills itself as a crossover between the Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers franchises, two series which mean considerably less to your average Joe today than they did back in 1996. I remember when Masahiro Sakurai unveiled the Akira and Jacky Mii costumes for Super Smash Bros for Wii U, Twitter blew up with questions along the lines of “what the hell is Virtua Fighter?” Nevertheless, Fighters Megamix has carved its way into the libraries of many fighting and retro game fans in recent years, largely due to its outrageous roster.

Admit it. You know about this game because of the car. I don’t judge you. It’s been twenty years.

Another year is about to close for SEGAbits. Many anniversaries for SEGA franchises happened this year, with SEGA themselves capitalizing on certain ones like Sonic the Hedgehog and Puyo Puyo. On top of this, naturally there were several announcements and game releases from both SEGA and Atlus. Some of which were what we expected, and then there was some that caught people off guard, like the return of the fan favorite Daytona USA. SEGA News Bits: Valkyria Revolution coming west reaction

SEGA has just announced that it will be bringing Valkyria: Azure Revolution to America and changing the name to simply Valkyria Revolution. Not only that, Valkyria Revolution will also be coming to Xbox One! So on this episode of the SEGA News Bits we sit and talk about Valkyria Revolution coming west, whine about PC not getting a port, if the added Xbox One version is worth the effort, and of course discuss the game being poorly received in Japan. Unboxing: Sonic X Collection 01 Seasons 1&2 DVD

Discotek Media’s release of Sonic X Collection 01 Seasons 1&2 released to DVD today, and upon opening it I was pretty impressed with the packaging so I thought I’d do one of those unboxings kids love so much. The release contains the first 52 episodes, which were divided into two seasons in the West, and contains only the English dub. A second collection containing season 3 is due out December 6th.

Matt has worked on a variety of Archie’s video game books, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Universe, Mega Man and the incredibly popular Sonic Mega Drive. The SEGA Five: SEGA published games that deserve more attention

If you discuss Streets of Rage, Super Monkey Ball, or even anything Sonic, chances are you can hear that 90’s jingle of retro goodness (SEGAAAAAAAAAAA!). The company helped create some wonderful games and franchises and are still going strong to this day. That being said, most of the games published by SEGA are sometimes often forgot about and usually sit on store shelves to collect dust and/or be pauper’s pennies.

While I haven’t played every single game SEGA has helped publish, some of those games stick out to me in a very unique and interesting way. And SEGA, being the quirky company they are, brought me wonderful memories and breathes a one-of-a-kind charm to those certain games. So in no particular order (with the first one being my favorite out of the five), here are some games that rightfully deserve more attention than they get!
