Welcome to The Next Level/No Limits audio commentary, featuring My Life with SEGA’s A.J. Rosa, SEGAbits editor Barry the Nomad, and Kori of The Website of the Dead. Here they discuss the process of making the two My Life with SEGA short films The Next Level and No Limits, the Panzer Dragoon series, as well as SEGA’s past, present and future. Expect to find this commentary on the upcoming The Next Level/No Limits DVD. In the meantime, we’re hard at work on the VCD version of the short films, which as previously revealed is to have special SEGA CD/Saturn box art. We’ll have more information on how you can get your hands on that special release very soon!

My Life with SEGA: No Limits – online now, coming to SEGA Saturn Video CD later this year!

The “wait” is over. No Limits is the thrilling sequel to last year’s The Next Level, starring A.J. Rosa, Mickey Mac, Shawn Morgan and Alex Gonzales, with Jessie Wyrick.

Shawn has decided to unleash Lucifer-Alpha on an unsuspecting SEGA West, which will be launched from his newly acquired star cruiser, the U.S.S. Uranus. Little does he realize that A.J. and Mickey Mac aim to kick his sorry ass into oblivion. Loaded with action, comedy, foul language and tasteless humor, this exciting short is proof that there are no limits.

After the break, check out the special Video CD release featuring a retro SEGA CD Saturn plastic box design that we have planned for No Limits, The Next Level, and My Life with SEGA’s reviews of Panzer Dragoon, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Virtual-On.

My Life with SEGA battles it out in Marvel Super Heroes for the SEGA Saturn

Marvel Super Heroes was Capcom’s follow-up to their equally successful X-Men: Children of the Atom fighting game.

Like its predecessor, Marvel Super Heroes shares much in common with Capcom’s prolific Street Fighter series with over-the-top anime-style action, combo system and so on. While the arcade game was first released in 1995, console gamers wouldn’t receive a home port until late 1997 on Sony PlayStation and, of course, SEGA Saturn.

The Saturn version is fantastic. The animation is like an explosion of color that’s very faithful to the arcade original, with an energetic soundtrack and kick-ass sound effects. Now that Lauren’s joined the League of Extraordinary Dorks, I feel it’s high-time I make her suffer for NHL ’94.

FUN FACT: The American version is the one and only game outside of Japan that supports the RAM cartridge. To learn more about this delightful peripheral, check out the episode of My Life with SEGA dedicated to it!

SEGA Cinema Holiday Special: Sonic Christmas Blast

Welcome to the third SEGA Cinema! In celebration of the holiday season, Barry the Nomad and Sonic Retro staff members David the Lurker and Bartman settle in around the fireplace, sip eggmanog, and enjoy two episodes of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. The first is the holiday special “Sonic Christmas Blast”, which released three years after the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog aired. The special was planned to be titled “An X-Tremely Sonic Christmas” to tie in with Sonic X-treme. But when X-treme was scrapped, the title was changed to tie in with Sonic 3D Blast.

The second bonus episode is entitled “Sno Problem”, a wintery themed adventure that sees Sonic and Tails taking on Robotnik who has unleashed his Ultra Freeze-O-Matic on mobius. His grand scheme? Watch and find out!

My Life with SEGA tackles the ultimate cute ’em up: Fantasy Zone

This week on My Life with SEGA, we’ll be exploring Opa-Opa’s very first adventure in the Fantasy Zone.

Fantasy Zone is one of many titles brother insisted on buying for the Master System. It was so strange and other-worldly. Fantasy Zone was unlike any other he shooter he had seen before. While the gameplay is similar to something like Defender, that game was nowhere near as colorful and cheerful. I can’t remember ever seeing this fucker in the arcades, so I thought this was a Master System original for many years….

Our newest YouTube series, This is Saturn, takes a Rolling Staaaaaaaaaaart!

Presenting a new SEGAbits YouTube channel original series dedicated to SEGA’s 2D and Arcade powerhouse, the SEGA Saturn. Our new series, entitled “This is Saturn”, is created by the latest member of the SEGAbits team, Liam ‘Tracker’ Ashcroft. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Tracker was the winner of our third anniversary contest back in February. It ended up being sort of a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory situation, where he not only won the prizes, but was also invited on staff. We just refused to also house his family, and we have no chocolate to share.

In this premiere episode, Tracker looks at the arcade hit Daytona USA’s conversion to the Saturn. Take it away, Tracker:

Daytona USA is a game I have fond memories of in terms of the arcade – both the original and the also fantastic sequel (which is crying out for a home port) have eaten many £1 pieces out of my wallet over the years, and the HD re-release on PSN was great!. As a result, the game was the first thing I bought for my Saturn – and it only set me back 50p!

So, is it still an arcade classic? Or is it just a polygonal pile of shit? Let’s find out, in a review certainly not ripped from my personal channel. Not in the slightest.

My Life with SEGA vs. Aliens vs. Predator

The screaming continues on My Life with SEGA with Aliens vs. Predator for PlayStation 3. For the first time ever, I’m reviewing a current generation title on a non-SEGA console, based on the long-standing franchises from 20th Century Fox.

Both franchises have experienced their fair share of hardships. The Alien series was effectively derailed after the ill-conceived Alien 3 in 1992, while the Predator went dormant after the been-there-done-that reception of 1990’s Predator 2. In spite of this, the comic series published by Dark Horse comics has fairly well received since its conception. It has lived on in comics, novels, films and, of course, video games.

The first game based on the series appeared on Atari’s swan song, the Jaguar, and grew from there. Now, it has found its way to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, published by our beloved SEGA….

My Life with SEGA Season 2 kicks off with Alien Trilogy: Revisited

My Life with SEGA: Season 2 opens with a three-part episode detailing the Alien franchise, from Alien Trilogy on SEGA Saturn to Aliens vs. Predator on PS3, even Aliens: Colonial Marines. Ugh! I think I just vomited a little. In my pants.

Anyway, in this week’s episode, I’m revisiting Alien Trilogy. You may be thinking, “Jesus, what more does he have to say about it? Move on already!” Well, I wasn’t entirely happy with that video to begin with, and my feeling’s towards it have changed a bit since….2011? Good lord.

My Life with SEGA returns this October with an Alien-packed season 2 premiere

The SEGAbits YouTube channel original series My Life with SEGA will return this October with a three part assault on the Aliens franchise! On October 2nd, AJ revisits the Alien Trilogy, a game he reviewed way back before the series moved to SEGAbits. October 16th sees the battle of Aliens vs. Predator, and then the infamous Aliens: Colonial Marines lands the day before Halloween. Check out the trailer above, and mark your calendars!

My Life with SEGA gets unboxed by SEGA CD Universe

YouTube user Vampire Mike, owner of the SegaCDUniverse YouTube channel, has created an unboxing video of the recently released “SEGAbits Presents My Life with SEGA” DVD which was given away as part of our third anniversary contest. While Vampire Mike was not a contest winner, he was enough of a My Life with SEGA fan to receive a copy of the DVD from AJ, as well as a hilarious note and a special Video CD version of “SEGAbits Presents My Life with SEGA” for use on the SEGA Saturn. As AJ is on summer vacation, with new episodes returning in October, I thought I’d share this special unboxing video. Check it out, and check out SegaCDUniverse’s awesome channel!

My Life with SEGA takes to the skies with Panzer Dragoon Saga

Panzer Dragoon Saga. So much has already been said in regards to Yukio Futatsugi’s swan song for Sega’s then underrated Saturn console. It’s received unanimous praise from gamers and critics alike, and has become a highly sought after collector’s item since its release….

Expectations were exceedingly high throughout the course of Panzer Dragoon Saga’s 2 year development. Not only would it expand on the franchises mythology, but it would be the first – and, as of this writing, last – role-playing game in the series. Players would be free to explore this incredible universe by air and on foot. This series, much like the dragon itself, evolved.

Sadly, it fell on some dark days. Saturn was on its way out in North America, which resulted in Saga receiving a limited run of only 30,000 copies. Considering there were over 2 million units sold in the United States, Saga was spread pretty thin. Used copies have been known to fetch well over $500 dollars on Amazon and eBay. Just think, that’s the suggested retail price of an Xbox One.

SEGA releases second Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse behind the scenes video

SEGA has released the second behind the scenes trailer for their upcoming HD remake of the Genesis/Mega Drive classic Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse. The first behind the scenes video discussed the classic title, while the second video mainly covers the remake, going into character, stage and sound design. The game is looking great, with a lot of fun little graphical and gameplay details. I especially liked the bit where the lamp switch doubles as a rope, and using it causes the light to turn on and off. After the break, check out a piece of promo art for the game.
