Sonic Free Riders and Virtual-On Force go platinum in Japan

Takashi Iizuka: A Platinum Collection release of Sonic Free Riders? (laughs) …Yes!

Yes, believe it or not, the often criticized Sonic Free Riders will receive a Platinum Collection release in Japan tomorrow. Perhaps the game was actually pretty enjoyable and warranted the sales, and most of the vitriol came from those who just love to hate on games they never actually played? Or maybe the Japanese just like to support titles from Japanese developers when it comes to XBOX releases in Japan. For those who don’t know, Platinum Collection titles are games considered by Microsoft to have sold considerable units since release. These select titles are given new packaging and are sold at a lower price. So kudos to SEGA for not one, but TWO Platinum Collection releases. The second game to be released tomorrow is Virtual-On Force, which will receive a cute upgrade to the game’s cover. Check that out after the break.

Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Force is a Japan exclusive sequel in the Virtual-On franchise. The game originally released back in December, 2010. Fans of the franchise from outside Japan were delighted to learn that the game was not region locked, and so many imported the title. The game was originally released in a basic logo-only cover or a super special (and super expensive) Memorial Box. The Platinum release looks to lower the price of the plain version and gives it a much improved cover. So win-win! You can pre-order the game now at Play-Asia, though be aware that the rerelease has yet to be confirmed to be region free, though the original pressing was. Virtual-On Force and Sonic Free Riders release tomorrow.

Now, allow Takenobu Mitsuyoshi to serenade you…

For anyone interested, you can find Virtual On Force on the Hong Kong XBL Marketplace for next to nothing. The account is easy to set up and you can purcahse HK XBL Points from Play-Asia.

    Enjoy 😉

Iizuka is too busy working on his next masterpiece to even care about such a thing.

but that’s good news for Sonic, even more proof that Sonic sells well on non-Nintendo platforms. It’s why SEGA has no trouble ignoring the Wii.

Sonic Free Riders should not be the main focus of the article. Virtual-On Force has no region lock, so go import the game people! It is one of the cheapest Xbox 360 games to import on Play-Asia as far as I can see.
