Who owns the ‘Mario and Sonic’ franchise? By the covers it appears to be Sega’s but by the title you’d think it was more Nintendo’s, as Sega would more likely call it ‘Sonic and Mario’ – in that order.
As for development, in-house by both members of Sega as well as Nintendo?

I could be wrong, but I think almost all the games are developed by Sega Sports. As far as publishing goes, Nintendo publishes them in Japan, while Sega publishes them everywhere else. The 2 exceptions being Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016. Nintendo does all the publishing for those games (why they changed it is beyond me). Although Sega handles the arcade side of Rio. So maybe they just go halfsies??? I dunno. 😛 I just always figured they titled it as “Mario & Sonic” because Mario’s older. Or maybe because Mario more recognizable (can’t think of a better way to say it). Just about anything with Mario will sell. Either way, I think you bring up a really good question.

no, they put Mario first because he is their guest. It’s pretty typical of Japanese polite-ness. Mario being the first name actually makes it clear Sega is making this with Nintendo’s permission. If it had been the other way around I would guarantee it would be Sonic & Mario.

Ah, I see. That’s a pretty cool way of showing polite-ness. Thanks a lot for clearing that up.
