SEGA plans “revival of major IPs”, which is a phrase that a lot of SEGA die hard fans have been waiting to hear from the company in a very long time. SEGA revealed this strategy when the company did their “Road to 2020” business presentation. If you look at the ‘Segment / Business Strategies’ on their latest fiscal report, it highlights the following big points:
Packaged Games Field (example titles: Total War: Warhammer, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, Football Manager 2017, and Persona 5)
- Expand existing IPs and obtain new IPs for North American and European PC games
- Build revenue base by being entrusted with outsourced development
- Challenge for new IPs
- Revival of major IPs
- Effective utilization of development engines
Digital Games Field (example titles: Puyo Puyo!! Quest, Hortensia Saga, Chain Chronicle 3, and Phantasy Star Online 2)
- Create titles that will become global hits
- Establish digital marketing business
- Expand overseas publishing business
- Maintain profits through long-term operation of existing titles
- Develop next-generation titles
If you notice, they have a nice section where they highlight that they are planning not only original IPs but also SEGA plans “revival of major IPs”. But what would SEGA consider a “major IP”? One of the challenges SEGA has with reviving IPs is that they want them to be ‘global hits’, so what titles do you think are considered ‘global hits’? SEGA plans “revival of major IPs”, do you believe it or is it a ‘wait and see’ sort of thing?

Just what do they mean by this exactly? The major IPs they have that are only ones making money are Sonic, Yakuza, Valkyria Chronicles and I think Phantasy Star.
The article doesn’t say about any of the old IPs coming back…
more detail here http://www.tssznews.com/2017/05/14/sega-plans-to-revive-major-ips-sega-sammy-recoving-from-restructure/
I hope they’ll bring back older IPs
(Especially Nights and Ristar)
Sound good, but if i where them they should release the revival ips on the next consoles. Buy the time they are out on the current gen there will be too many competition.
If you look at the success yakuza and persona does games came out when the games well was dry. And i think buy the time valkyria ps4 / xbx1 psvita comes out it will be to late to be a success, because there are other games on the horizon.
Maybe if sega had released it sooner i would have been a success
The sega games i look forward to sega saying rise from your grave are:
1) no surprise here Daytona
2) Deepfear (outsourcing company Suda 51 or Creative Assembly)
3) Baku Baku why because there is low risk in making the game switch exclusive
4) Shining Force (bring back the old theme)
5) Virtual Fighter vs Megamix (service based make first some money then make VF 6)
6) Monkey Ball (switch exclusive ) up to 6 players
7) Phantasy star (launch title for the next consoles in 2020 and cross platform)
8) Outrun (ps4, xbx1, switch and pc)
9) sky’s of Arcadia (title the new hope..lol)
10) shenmue
New IP’s, some remasters and VF and Sakura Wars are realistic imo
Can’t help but feel I heard this all before and also very troubled to see SEGA wanting to outsource more 🙁
If only they would consider Streets of Rage as a “major IP”… NiGHTS and Burning Rangers would be nice too.
Jet Set Radio Future it is Time!
This Tweet by Obsidian could mean something. 😛

Crossing fingers for Billy Hatcher to get some love.
I would take anything at this point. = ) good news nonetheless!
I could see a new Super Monkey Ball for the Switch + maybe PS4/Xbone, the console was made for the series and after seeing Puyo Puyo and other niche japanese IPs like Bomberman seem to do alright in the West, I would expect SEGA to capitalize on the console’s success by trying to revive some older cartoony/arcade IP. Alpha Protocol 2 seems like a possibility after that tweet from Obsidian + the cult following the original game has amassed over the years too.
Crazy Taxi console game maybe? The mobile game was a huge success so its not like people have forgotten about the series.
Still don’t want to get my hopes up, I don’t think IPs like Jet Set Radio, NiGHTS, Ristar, etc. are what they mean by this. I think if anything it would be a series that with a few successful games under its belt already, not something that flopped on release I.E. Ristar or Jet Set.
I hope this time its for all systems and not ps4 only, that and physical copies. Shining force, Dragon force, Shinobi. I still have Deep Fear on the Sega Saturn and love playing it.
@ Miguel. Nice you know what good games are 🙂
Thank you 😊
Honestly, I would like to see these titles come back, but I’d also like to see the company do it in an indie way. Don’t chase AAA glory, work with smaller budgets and create a series of solid $19.99 mid- tech games.
Make titles that are innovate, that people can pick up and play. Nintendo is cashing in on taking chances right now, and Sega (well, old Sega at least) was always good at that.
Major IPs? Yeah, Sonic. What about the Daytona IP?
Happy to hear this. I almost gave up on pso2 eu/us release.
