SEGA and Platinum Games, that’s a partnership I have not heard of for a long time…
Just announced officially is the Bayonetta & Vanquish 10th Anniversary Bundle, a remastered combo pack celebrating the 10th anniversary of Platinum Games early titles. Due out February 18, 2020, the games will be available physically and digitally for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Priced at a cool $39.99 physically and digitally (or $24.99 each on digital platforms if you don’t opt for the bundle), SEGA is offering an extra incentive for physical purchases. The games will be contained in a double sided steelbook featuring new artwork in a slipcover. The games will be combined on one disc. 2020 is going to be a great year for gaming, so many excellent releases lined up, new console generation… too bad it’s all so expensive!
If SEGA really do own the Bayonetta IP then, surely it shouldn’t be that hard that for them to rerelease Bayonetta 2 as well, or even completely remake it to get away from the old Nintendo exclusivity contract funding, similarly to what Sega Europe just did with rereleasing Catherine, which was essentially the same as the old Atlus only copyright game but with a ton of extras in the newer Sega version.
I bet Sega is regretting now in hindsight allowing Nintendo co-ownership of the Bayonetta IP, it now means it can never see the light of day on anything but Nintendo hardware even if it is a Sega IP as well, which means Sega can never rerelease them without Nintendos say so and even then it can only come out on one system.
Not unless Sega buys out the contract or pays them on how much they funded to create 2 or 3.
Could that ever be a possibility?
Considering that according to Wikipedia, Nintendo fully published 2, it’s a strange set up it seems, when you see the intro for Bayonetta 2, SEGA appears foremost before Nintendo’s logo.
Hopefully in time they’ll buy the publishing rights for 2 and 3 so that Nintendo won’t be associated with the series anymore.
Nintendo would have to want to relinquish their rights too though, it’s not enough for Sega to just want to reclaim it back in full, it would be a two way process there, which is unfortunate because then it means the chances are slim unless Sega somehow as the IP holder has some more leeway over it that we dont know about yet
*I could be wrong though, not 100% sure, maybe Nintendos rights as publishers don’t matter as much compared to the rights of the true IP holder, for example Shenmue III has had publishing duties handled by Deep Silver, but Sega still has their copyright officially on the game and many Sega references within the game world still are used in Shenmue III, but as for the future possibility of Sega re-releasing Shenmue III themselves, it’s similar to the chances of them publishing Bayonetta 2 as well.
It feels like the Wonder Boy argument, who owns what.
I just hope that Sega somehow regains the publishing rights for 2 and 3 even if they have to pay.
