Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie plot synopsis released

With the Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel, appropriately titled Sonic the Hedgehog 2, having wrapped in Toronto we now have an official plot synopsis from Paramount:

After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. Being directed by Jeff Fowler, and starring Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Ben Schwartz.

The movie very much appears to use elements of the third Sonic game and its add-on Sonic & Knuckles, while also featuring the debut of Tails who appeared only in a post-credits scene in the original film. Also worth noting, Tom and Maddie leaving on a vacation is likely to see them off screen for much of the film, a common trope in sequels when they want to shift focus to other characters.

In this case, its for the best as it looks like we will be seeing Sonic and Tails versus Knuckles and Robotnik with an eventual turn to good guy from Knuckles as on-set photos show him standing alongside Sonic and Tails. Also, emeralds are showing up in the films with the ability to build and destroy civilizations. Could Robotnik be tempting Knuckles with the ability to rebuild the Echidna society we saw in the original film?
