Dreamcast Collection – Launch Trailer

Check out the launch trailer for the Dreamcast Collection, (if you can be bothered….) In all honesty it’s as underwhelming as the collection itself.

If you pick up this collection you can expect to play two less than perfect ports, (Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure) a dated fishing game (Sega Bash Fishing) and the only redeeming game on the disc, Space Channel 5 Part 2.

Ask yourself, do I think this makes a good Dreamcast Collection? Is this how we want to celebrate the console we all love? I don’t! I think Sega of America knows how much some of us love the Dreamcast and are trying to play us like a fiddle. I understand this is volume 1 and that suggests more to come but I find it rather hard to get excited when REZ HD, Virtual On, Samba de Amigo and Chu Chu Rocket were also readily available.

You want me to get excited by this? Give me six great games on one disk… Not three mediocre ports and Space Channel 5. Good day to you sir.

I think the trailer's alright, but the games themselves…is there anyone on the planet who doesn't already own Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi?

As part of a larger collection they would have been fine but half the value? No thanks.

And by the way, most of these aren't even DC ports. They're ports-of-ports.

Anything interesting in the manual? Histories of the games, info on dev teams?

I think people are overreacting about this. The collection is $30 at launch. That is cheaper than buying all of the games separately, likely in any format.

The port of Sonic Adventure is actually pretty good too, just uses the shitty models changes from the GameCube release.

On the topic of that, none of these games are actually directly Dreamcast games. Sonic Adventure is based on the PC release of DX, Space Channel 5 Part 2 is based on the PlayStation 2 release, Crazy Taxi is based on the PC release, and SEGA Bass Fishing is actually just the Wii version without many changes.

A poor show for sure, but I do not think they are asking much at all.

  4. DCGX says:

That is a poor show. They might as well call it the Dreamcast Port Collection. -nSega54- mentioned the trailer, and that wasn't even put together very well.

    The Dreamcast does deserve better.

  5. -nSega54- says:

30 dollars is ridiculously overpriced for 3/4 of the games offered. These are not rare games at all except Space Channel.

Sonic Adventure and Bass Fishing can be found for $6-$7 a piece on Ebay, and Crazy Taxi is in such low demand that one Ebay search showed that someone's selling *both* CT1 and CT2 together for …$2. Yup.

Space Channel 5 Part 2 is the only game in this collection that's worth anything. I know they're eager to milk this for what it's worth, but would it be so much to ask to actually include games that people maybe haven't gotten to experience before? Like, say, Shenmue? Or JGR?

    This collection's a joke.

I was planning on getting SC5p2 and CT on xbox live separately but I figure it would probably be best to just get a hard copy version of them and get Sonic Adventure thrown in as a bonus. I own copies of all of these games aleady and have the fishing controller but for sake of convenience and rescaled widescreen for CT and SC5 I'll probably get a copy sometime next month.

  7. upsidedown fuji says:

Also here's hopeing for Dreamcast Collection volume II and so-on.

  8. George says:

Dude, so what they cost on ebay. This is a digital game and by 'digital prices' 10 dollars a title is a fair price.

  9. Gagaman says:

Sega Bass Fishing on the Wii was actually a complete remake of the Dreamcast game rather than a port. It looks quite different visually: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w6H4_BWnPo

If anything the Bass Fishing on here is probably a port of the PC version.

  10. cube_b3 says:

What would you guys think of Chu Chu Rocket was an unlock able in the collection, surely 5 game collection would make things alright?

My only complaint right now is that the trailer sucked eggs, The individual trailers of CT & SA1 were really nice.

  11. Sharky says:

Imo Chu Chu Rocket would have been the LEAST they could do… There are already a number of great Dreamcast games they could pilfer from various places including Virtual On, REZ and even Skies of Arcadia from Gamecube.

  12. Sharky, why u stuck on Virtual On and Rez? Rez HD is already on the Qubed compilation disc which can be found for $10-$15. Plus, wouldn't SEGA have to share profits with Q Entertainment then? Virtual On isn't under the Dreamcast Collection banner and has been out for quite a while. To stick it on a compilation disc would be rather lame, as I'd much prefer Virtual On Force to hit Europe and US regions.

Chu Chu Rocket I do agree with though. That, Jet Set Radio, Sonic Adventure 2 and an AM2 classic would make for a great volume 2.

  13. Centrale says:

You guys complaining about the price point act as though there are millions of people who still have a functioning Dreamcast set up and ready to play all those great eBay bargains.

As for the trailer, well… they could have at least gotten someone who can play Crazy Taxi. Looked like someone's first time trying the game.

  14. -nSega54- says:

Even if you don't have a working DC, you can still buy almost all of these games on other systems. The Wii has a Sega Bass Fishing remake that's even better than this one, Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi can be found online for the PS3/360 as we speak.

And then you'll have to keep switching discs to play the whole "collection" once other volumes come out? The great thing about Genesis Collection was that it was all on 1 disc.

Sorry but this is just weak. 5 games would have been a little better. 10 would be ideal. Why do multiple volumes? Why not just release one great product? It's the Sonic 4 thing all over again. This should have been a mindblowing collection, not "oh, here's 4 games that are cheap for us to port, now pay $30."

  15. crackdude says:

God so much blabbering going on.

"HURR DURR Im new to gmaes and I only got this 3Box60 thing. Hey look 4 games for the price of half one. And it's Sonic!11! and fish"

Remeber, most people do not have Dreamcasts. These games are great too. All 4 of them are extremely fun. Crazy Taxi suffers with the lack of Offspring, but otherwise it's cool.

I don't know why the post mentions Bass Fishing as a mediocre port.. Is the game out already? Is it a bad port? I haven't "caught" (get it?) up with the news yet..

My major complaint, why the fuck isn't this on the PS3?

This reminded me that "5 things sega fans should stop asking" article.

  17. -nSega54- says:

I'm not asking for 50 games, I'm asking for a Dreamcast *collection.* Not *3 games I own already plus Space Channel.*

I don't care personally if "most people don't own DCs." I own a DC and I own these games already. Therefore this collection is a disappointment for me. It doesn't seem to be much of a value and it's clear that SEGA did this with as little effort as possible.

As for why it's not on PS3 as well, well, like I said, this Collection is a lazy effort. The fact that it's only on the 360 just sort of solidifies that.

  18. This isn't on the PS3 because Sony does not like to release PSN compilations. Note that Qubed, Plants vs. Zombies, Namco Museum: Virtual Arcade and a number of other XBLA compilation discs are on the 360. But you'll never see them on the PS3. Sony just don't do that. Not sure if its a money reason or a technical reason. But if SEGA had the opportunity, they'd gladly release a PS3 version (more $$$). But as I said, Sony doesn't allow it.

10 games is asking a lot, in my opinion. Perhaps a year from now we *might* have 10 Dreamcast games released, but even then, SEGA isn't going to put them all on one disc for a budget price. I highly doubt that they or MS would back a $60 compilation disc either.

  19. ribbitking17 says:

I think its a good deal. I only have space channel 5 right now. These are all good games and you get alot for the price.

  20. -nSega54- says:

@Barry: To me though dude a "collection" just implies more than this.

When SEGA went and did their Genesis collection, they took, basically, every big Genesis game and put into a compilation disc loaded with save features, achievements/trophies, etc. I mean, it was a full-on collection.

Fans have been waiting for the DC to get similar treatment. We get 4 ported games slapped onto a disc for $30. The Dreamcast remains an incredibly beloved system in many circles, and it deserved a compilation package made with care, with a big selection of games on it, with new features, with all that great stuff. Can you imagine the press it would have gotten if Shenmue/JSR ended up on there? Even games like D2, which I never got to play, I mean, I'd drop $60 on a legit DC compilation. This, though…to me there's nothing here to get even remotely excited about. How can you do a DC compilation without Sonic Adventure 2, even? It's crazy.

I don't know how many volumes SEGA intends to put out, but if they put out 3 you're already spending $90+ if you want to collect them all. Just totally the wrong way to do it.

You're getting 3 mediocre compilations instead of the epic collection the DC deserved.

  21. Centrale says:

When this was first announced I think it should have been pretty obvious that they were basically compiling the DLC releases onto a disc. This has been an established pattern for DLC for a few years now. It's precisely why I opted to not buy the DLC games, because I knew there was a retail version on the way. As for complaining about not wanting to buy these games again if you already have them, I don't know what to tell you. Clearly this is not intended for you.

  22. crackdude says:

-nSega54- , this disc is intended for people who don't have these games yet.

I have two of them, and am getting SC5. This is not for me. Nor for you.

If I didn't have any of these games, I would gladly get it day one. And maybe so would you.

This isn't sloppy work from Sega. It's a compilation of 4 games, just as the front of the box indicates.

"I own a DC and I own these games already. Therefore this collection is a disappointment for me."

This collection isn't meant to please you AT ALL. It's meant to please people how DON'T own a DC and DON'T own these games.

I don't get what you're complaining about. By your logic, if someone owns all DC games they will be disappointed with ANY combination of DC titles.
