If you asked me to name an underrated Sega game or series I would have a lot to choose from, but perhaps it’s the entire Monster World aka Wonder Boy series which has been most criminally underrated over the years. I rarely see anyone talking about this fantasitc series anymore and it makes me a sad, sad man.
Monster World IV aka Wonder Boy VI (Confusing right?) Is not only the best game in the series it’s also one of the most beautiful games on the MegaDrive/Genesis period. But worst of all it didn’t even make it out of Japan!
But now this may be rectified. Over at the OFLC (Australia rating board) a rating for Monster World IV has been spotted. What does this mean? It means I’m now courteously optimistic that Sega has seen the light and decided to bring us Monster World IV! Possibly on XBLA, PSN, Wiiware or Steam, maybe all four! Wouldn’t that be a treat?
Is my dream of a brand new Wonder Boy/Monster World game one step closer? It would look amazing on the Hedgehog Engine in a 2D point of view… Please Sega?Ad:

No its just MONSTER WORLD IV. Wonderboy wasn't in this game. MONSTER WORLD III was WONDERBOY V.

Don't you mean all four? 🙂
The Wonder Boy and/or Monster Land/World series is fantastic, if a bit confusing with the naming conventions. I've only played the beginning of Monster World IV, but from what I've seen it's a tour de force of beautiful animation and art direction.
@ROJM: yeah, I'd love to have the Sega Ages collection over in my neck of the woods too.
I agree, my brothers and me really love the franchise. I remember long time ago where my little brother would play wonder boy in monsterland, and I was playing that game in the screen.
Sadly I never finished it, neither did my brother finish his game. But the games themselves were excellent. Today you have 2d sidescrolling rpg’s like metroid and castlevania, which are stil lgreat. But wonderboy’s concept is still as original as it was back then.
I know Westone (the game’s developer/creator)wanted to do a new one when Sega released this game under the MONSTER WORLD compilation but nothing seemed to come from it. Pity because i think if anything should come over would be those compilation SEGA AGES titles, especially the PHANTASY STAR remakes.
Damn it! I can’t count.
