SEGA in the Charts: Japanese sales 21 – 27 Feb 2011

It’s been a while since the last major Japanese release for SEGA but the wait is finally over, Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity was released in the same week as the new handheld 3DS. Whilst Phantasy Star Portble 2: Infinity posted some impressive numbers below, it does not tell the full story;

Position / Platform / Title / Weekly numbers / Lifetime numbers

01 [PSP] Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity  206,654 / NEW

When the first Phantasy Star Portable was released, it managed to sell in the region of 360,000 units and the sequel, PSP2, managed 280,000 whilst the newest entry into the series shows further steep decline for sales in the series, perhaps the bubble is slowly bursting, but who knows, yearly releases are bound to have an effect, so it’ll be interesting to see the result when Phantasy Star Online 2 is released, although with the PC market in Japan, I would not be surprised about the level of sales being lower.

The original shipment for Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity was around 330,000 so expect strong sales for next week too. Although will it still be number one in a week’s time? Doubtful as the new Dissidia is released for PSP, but it may still hold onto second place.

    It's great to see phantasy star getting more recognision.

    A decline eh? Maybe people are tired of buying what amounts to the same game for the 3rd time.

    There is no doubt that PSO2 will sell FAR less than these numbers. 200k in the first week is a rather impressive figure, one that can be credited largely to this being a multiplayer psp title. Not only is the pc market in japan much smaller as you mentioned, but PSO as a non-portable game has never fared nearly as well as its handheld counterparts. From a business point of view, it makes little sense to leave that market. Then again, what PSO2 loses on the domestic front, it may make up for internationally. Doubtful though!

    Not to mention, its just Phantasy Star Portable 2 with more content.

    I loved PSO on the DC but stopped playing it after it became pay to play, SEGA should seriously consider making a real sequel to the originals as they were excellent games.

    Something like Mass Effect taking place in the original PS universe would be amazing.

    Why wasn't Super Monkey Ball 3D in the chart? Wasn't it released along with the 3DS last week?

  6. George says:

    Super Monkey Ball 3D in Japan isn't a launch title.. its coming a week after the console comes out.

  7. Radrappy says:

    Plus it wouldn't crack the top ten anyway.
