Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing 2 To Be Revealed This Year?

We’ve already heard rumors that Sumo Digital are working on some sort of Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing title, but we were uncertain if it was a sequel or simply a port of the original to the Wii U, 3DS and Vita. At the New York Toy Fair, toys for the original title were on display and a booth attendent confirmed that SEGA is making a sequel with new characters and vehicles. So it seems at the very least, it could be an enhanced port of the original. Sort of like Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition or Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution. Or it could be a full-on sequel with new racers joining the original roster and a selection of new tracks. I’m hoping the latter is true, and that it releases for all HD consoles including the Wii U.

Last January I shared five things I hoped to see in a potential sequel, and my list still stands. I would love to see Sumo put 100% of their concentrations into a kick-ass HD game, without having to think about a downgraded Wii or 3DS port. I’d also love to see a larger track selection and of course more cult favorite characters including a larger Saturn presence.

ahhhhh I’d fuckin love an All Stars Racing sequel.

  2. DCGX says:

YES! Come on console exclusive characters again. Though my biggest hope is better track variety.

  3. CrazyTails says:

Yeah, I second DCGX. Needs more variety in franchise themes. It was really crazy how the first game didnt just lack franchise variety, but they also based 3 stages on the same levels for the sonic levels. seaside hill was used 3 times, flying fortress was used 3 times and the casino was used 3 times as well..

That is one thing that has to change for sure.

    • I didn’t find that crazy at all. They had all the assets, so why not design more than one track in a setting? The problem was that they didn’t develop more environments outside of what we got. Hopefully this time out they’ll focus less on racers and more on environments. Hopefully limiting the systems they develop for could free up dev time for more franchise tracks.

    • CrazyTails says:

Well in the context of that the developers didn’t get too much time, I could understand that. But imo if a sequel would ever be made, surely you would expect every stage to be unique. I mean I hate to bring it up, but other kart games do the same thing as well. I would at least hope SUMO to get the time for achieving that.

I mean those 3 sonic heroes themes could have been 9 different sonic themes, which would have been awesome. Now whenever I play the game’s regular cup modes, I feel like the sonic stuff is very repetetive.

    • I think the big problem that Sumo faced was that unlike past franchise racing games like Mario Kart, SASASR has multiple IPs with very very different art designs to each. To develop multiple tracks with a unique art style for each one would have been quite an undertaking. Also, the detail of the tracks was well beyond the detail seen in Mario Kart.

I agree though, that a sequel needs an emphasis on track variety. Also, Sumo shouldn’t be afraid to develop a few “cheap” tracks that would be easy to develop. A Space Channel 5 astroid track or simplistic 16-bit looking Fantasy Zone tracks would be both loads of fun AND easy to make. I recall Sumo’s rep said that they didn’t want to do these types of tracks, in fear that they’d be seen a cutting corners, but really, I’d rather they cut a few corners for the sake of new IPs.

I’m hoping for a sequel for all HD platforms and with online multiplayer support on the PC version this time, I would definitely buy it for the PC (didn’t buy the first one because of the lack of online multiplayer).

  5. Sharky says:

    Excited!

  6. radrappy says:

I think over all Im just hoping for better items and track variety. Other than those two points I was extremely pleased with the original!

  7. radrappy says:

oh! And a PSO themed level and racer. Rag Rappy perhaps? Make it happen Sumo.

  8. And work a bit on balancing the racers. Motorcycles seemed to be way better than anything else, making Shadow one of the most used racers. Lame.

However I did dominate quote a few motorcycles with the Forklift.

  9. Arc Christelle says:

But you know what else would be nice?? Multiplayer Grand Prix and Online Grand Prix, also I hope the items expand and All-Star online. We could a blue shell-esque item (Besides the big rocket) to help trailing players. You know…. just a touch of chaos. Also online Battle would be nice with variety.

    • Sharky says:

      God no! No blue-shell!
The blue shell is why I don’t enjoy Mario Kart anymore… The game basically punishes you for being a good racer.

    • Arc Christelle says:

lol Yes!!! I want the Chaos that is a blue shell. Especially in some cases of SASAR because some guy get First and you’ll NEVER see them again. Kart games are built for that insanity since Wacky Racers, there’s no such thing as a fair fight, and there damn sure won’t be a fair race. Best to go for broke!

  10. Kori-Maru says:

I’m all in for new racers and tracks. What we do need is more Sega Saturn reps like Sakura Shinguji and Segata Sanshiro. Hopefully Sumo can get some of the license asset from Red in order to include Shinguji-san. Also, lets not all forget Hornet from Daytona USA.

  11. radrappy says:

oh man if sakura was in this game driving a kobu, it would be AMAZING

  12. teirusu says:

it will be cool that the game has japanese voices

  13. Chaosmaster8753 says:

Oh the salt that would insue if Mario was in the Wii U and 3DS version/s. Anyway, I’d be on board for this.

  14. blarghen says:

    Needs Kiryu.

  15. Arc Christelle says:

So should we start some sort of Forum or page to push Segata Sanshiro in the next game?

  16. Philip says:

I really hope that they make a sonic and sega allstars racing 2 XD
