A Friendly Robot Reminder: Binary Domain in Stores NOW!

BEGIN COMMUNICATION Greetings carbon based lifeforms, SEGAbits-bot here. SEGA and Yakuza Studio’s newest game Binary Domain is now available to purchase and play in most human territories. I would direct you to a site that aggregates reviews for the game, but my subprocessors tell me that humans prefer the opinions of their peers. In the case of Binary Domain, it is advised to head on over to our forums to read the positive views expressed by SEGA fans who have already bought and played the game:

“I finished the game last night on survival difficulty – this is my favorite third person shooter campaign EVER.

Great and satisfying shooting mechanics, great and unique AI for the enemies, huge variety of enemies with really good designs…. and above all that one of the best boss battles in all time and i mean it! the bosses in this game is beyond incredible!”

-Suzuki Yu

“Very impressive for the team’s first third person shooter, I hope this does indeed become a series for SEGA!”

-Aki-at

For more information about the game, please allow me to direct you to our interview with the game’s producer. A happy release day and enjoy the game. END COMMUNICATION

With this news, SEGAbits already did a better job in the marketing of the game than SEGA. This game has mass appeal, a great game from a popular genre and the marketing was almost zero. The result is there: the game already bombed hard in Europe and i hope i’m wrong, but probably the same thing will happen in America.

Im just wondering, does Nagoshi know about this? Really, SEGA Japan did EVERYTHING right in the marketing, paid two commercial for tv, a crazy truck, a lot of famous people playing the game. SEGA West paid some adds on sites and called it a day. Nagoshi has a lot of faith in this game, does he know that the game will bomb hard because of the marketing?

    Im sorry for the rant.

Yeah, I love SoA’s community team, but they just don’t seem to care about this title. It’s all posts about Sonic and Jet Set Radio. No love for Binary Domain. They really should have had dev diaries leading up to the release and devoted today to posts all about the game: where to buy it, special trailers, contests, etc.

    • SEGA_Portuguese says:

I think the audience of this game is the people that are playing Call of Duty. They don’t really play a lot of games, just COD, Fifa soccer and some others. SEGA should have paid a commercial on tv and a crazy truck like Japan, so they could have reached this audience. But the did not, and now, even some people that read news about games every day don’t know about this game.

Im read that Mass Effect will break records, well, EA did a lot of marketing with the game, of course its gonna have good sales.

Only two more days until payday so I can buy this game!

I will say, there is SOME marketing. Mostly online. I you use your 360 and have it online, one of the ads popping up lately is an ad for the game. If you click on it, you can watch a trailer and automatically be entered in a contest to win 40,000 MS points. That’s a lot of points!

  5. Shigs says:

Y’know what? Screw it! I’m gonna go to Best Buy and get it now!

  6. -nSega54- says:

Unfortunately the marketing had been sub-par all the way through. Sega did very little to get the media and those reading it excited for the title, and delaying it to Mass Effect 3 month was just suicide. (Plus I think a lot of the internet ads ended up going up in January anyway, since those are booked far in advance and I remember seeing more promotion for the game back then than now.)

As for me, though it hurts to say it, I don’t think I’m going to be buying it at $60. My funds are incredibly tight at the moment and certain things about the demo just bothered me; the “Get into Cover” button should have been the bumper like it is in all cover shooter games, instead they mapped it to the A-button, which is also the roll. The cover button should never share its action with another button, because then you have your character rolling around when he should be covering, etc. Also, communicating with your team by holding down the bumper to pull up a menu DURING the action is a pain and makes me feel like I’ll never take advantage of it, and I also suck at cover shooters. So I kind of rely on the Cover to…well, keep me covered. In Binary Domain, cover doesn’t always seem to be all that safe, and though it’s cool that they’re providing a challenge, it really kills the pacing when you spend 15 minutes standing in and around a parked subway train killing what feels like an endless swarm of robots. Games like these need tight pacing and need to keep the characters moving.

Anyway….rant over. I’ll certainly be getting this game down the road but I feel like it’ll have to wait, sorry Sega.

    • Aki-at says:

The controls for the cover system, the rolling and all that literally is the same as you would find and countless other third person shooters. It’s set up exactly the same as many other cover based shooter from Gears to Uncharted, so what exactly are you meaning to say?

As for covering, it only kills the pacing if you’re not too good at cover based shooters. So there’s that.

lol well the problem for me is that there are far too many enemies attacking you at once, and set pieces go for far too long. In a game like Gears, you clear a horde and then get moving. In Binary Domain, you can stay in one place for like 15 minutes because the game just keeps throwing enemies at you…and I also think they take a little too long to kill. Too much HP each.

As far as triggering a roll, mapping it to the same button as the “get into cover” button was a mistake. Countless times I try to get into cover at a crucial moment only to have my main character roll right into enemy fire. The cover button should be its own button (Typically it’s the Right or Left Bumper) and not share it with another move.

Anyway, those are just a couple things that, to me, made the Binary Domain demo rather frustrating at times; Understand though that cover shooters for me just aren’t really my thing anyway, it’s never a genre that I’ve had a lot of interest in. Though I like cover shooting when it’s featured in games with many other components (like Red Dead Redemption, La Noire, Mass Effect 2, etc.) games that are strictly cover shooting, like this and Gears of War, have just never been my thing.

Vanquish though I was able to get into, but that was because it was incredibly fast-moving and had a clean interface…pretty much the opposite of Binary Domain, which I find to be slow and clunky. I’ll probably pick it up in the next couple months though just as a Sega fan, but I *need* to get Mass Effect 3 this month, and my cash flow’s very tight at the moment, unfortunately.

This depends on the mode you play in and how well you’ve upgraded your weapon, having completed the game, on the hardest setting, I did not stay in one section for 15 minutes, the longest I probably stayed was 5 minutes max.

Typically the jump and cover button IS the same button with Gears and Uncharted doing exactly the same method, I do not know where you got the idea the bumpers is how most the genre does it, because it does not, it’s exactly how Binary Domain does it.

  8. -nSega54- says:

Hm….well I haven’t played Uncharted or *too* much of Gears but in games like RdR and LA Noire the bumper on the controller triggers cover. Mass Effect 2 has other moves mapped to the A-button but they require either holding the A-button or pressing the A-button while directing the analog stick UP to vault over cover. But the act of just pressing alone A is exclusively used for putting you into cover.

In Vanquish, the X-button put you into cover. Did nothing else. I haven’t played other cover shooters where just pressing A does cover as well as another move. It’s not my favorite thing about BD, that’s for sure. If Gears does the same thing then I don’t think I’d like Gears all that much either.

Anyway like I said, I plan to buy Binary Domain but not this month, unfortunately. Financially I just can’t swing it. Sega hasn’t done anything marketing-wise to convince me that this game’s something I need to play immediately, (while EA has done just this for Mass Effect 3) and the BD demo I thought was decent but flawed.

  9. Randroid says:

Bought it day one, but just got to play it for the first time, last night.

Much better than the demo (I haven’t seen any frame skips yet). Stellar campaign mode. The characters grow on you fast. Cool upgrading, equipping system and great enemy design. Can’t wait to try the multiplayer.
