80% of Jet Set Radio’s soundtrack is intact, says SEGA [Update]

This according to Game Informer Magazine, who recently got some hands-on time with the upcoming digital re-release. They report that SEGA has retained 80% of the original’s soundtrack, and that this HD update will also feature camera controls mapped to the 2nd analog stick, something which, as Dreamcast fans will remember, wasn’t possible with that console’s controller. Region specific added levels will also make it to the digital version, all running at 60 fps.

My thoughts? 80% is unquestionably a majority of the soundtrack, though I’m personally awaiting a list of exactly what was included before getting too excited. I’ll go out on a limb here and assume that the tracks licensed for the North American and European releases aren’t going to make it this time around, but whether or not that’s the extent of the cuts remains to be seen.

Jet Set Radio will be releasing on XBLA, PSN, and PC sometime this year.

[Update] Joystiq confirms that Hideki Naganuma’s music will stay intact. Licensed music that has been confirmed to stay in the soundtrack include “Magical Girl” by Guitar Vadar and “Funky Radio” by B.B. Rights. [/Update]

Saw that one coming, the game had a few licensed tracks. But most of it (80%?) are Hideki Naganuma’s original compositions for the game.

I should probably update it but Guitar Vadar “Magical Girl” and “Funky Radio” By BB Rights are confirmed. Also all the Hideki Naganuma stuff.

  2. Sega Uranus says:

Right analog stick camera controls? Woah… I am honestly shocked they are adding that. It is an extremely positive addition.

I have always hated the first game and only ‘like’ JSRF, but I am now at least willing to try out the demo.

Hideki Naganuma composed several tracks for the game but certainly not most of them. Several others were created by Richard Jacques and then a host of others are licensed from out of house, including some favorites like Deavid Soul’s Miller Ball Breakers; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKpusImRA-c

    as well as others. It’ll be interesting to see whether these made the cut. Wikipedia actually has a pretty comprehensive list of the game’s tracks and who made them, and there are several licenses in there;

If Deavid Soul and B.B. Rights aren’t included, the game will be severely hurt. Those songs really made the game.

Guitar Vader, while I love their tracks, aren’t as crucial. Still, gotta have a complete (Japanese) soundtrack for the game to be Jet Set Radio.

  5. CosmicCastaway says:

If the Rob Zombie songs are cut I wouldn’t be that upset, I didn’t really like those two songs anyway.

  6. segaismysavior says:

I was just thinking last night about the possibility of camera controls for the extra analog stick, I’m so glad they’re putting effort into this game!

The soundtrack should pan out to be what we expect.

  7. Upsidedown Fuji says:

80 percent and Hideki Naganuma’s tracks are still in. That’s not as bad as I was expecting. Hopefully B.B. Rights and David Soul are still in. I can live without the rest. 🙂 60fps oh yes.

There was only 1 Rob Zombie song, the other North American songs were from Cold, Mixmaster Mike, Professional Murder Music, and Jurassic 5. Though maybe not crucial, I kind of hope at least a couple of those make it in there, though I s’pose not at the expense of the original Japanese soundtrack.

    • CosmicCastaway says:

My mistake nSega, I always thought it was Rob Zombie songs for both of Cube and Combo’s USA levels.

  9. -nSega54- says:

haha nah it was actually about 5 different ones. 2 alt metal ones (Rob Zombie/Cold) and 3 hip hop tracks. (Mixmaster/Jurassic 5/Prof Murder Music.)

I actually dug that part of the game so that’s how I know so much about it. :p

Patrol Knob by Mixmater Mike (very cool little track) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2GTv19iFE8

good to hear about the update, im sure super brother is also in. but deavid soul MUST be in. Miller Ball Breakers and all his other tracks are some of jsr’s best.

  11. Shigs says:

This is better than I was expecting. I was worried it might gonna be another Crazy Taxi fiasco. As long as Naganuma is in, I’m happy.

  12. CrazyTails says:

    80% is good 🙂

  13. The Dead Skin says:

    “Funky Radio” was LICENSED?!

  14. -nSega54- says:

Yeah man, lots of tracks were, *especially* in JSRF. That’s why I was so worried initially about these games being re-released, though thankfully it looks like Sega’s really working to secure as much of the soundtrack as possible, which is nice.

This made me warm and fuzzy inside 🙂
