Sumo Digital’s Steve Lycett shared a bit of good news (or bad news, depending on who you are) at the official SEGA forums regarding additional Sonic characters as playable racers in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Steve aka S0L said:

I don’t consider this a deconfirm, but we’ve revealed all the Sonic characters we’re going to reveal that are considered playable.
*Waits for fire to start*
This means that the playable racing roster will be containing no more than seven Sonic characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Eggman, Metal Sonic and Shadow. Interestingly, none of the characters are from post-2001. Also, the roster contains the complete Sonic Drift roster, a near complete Sonic Drift 2 roster (replacing Fang for Shadow) and a near complete Sonic R roster (Tails Doll, Metal Knuckles and Egg Robo are absent and Super Sonic appears as Sonic’s All-Star Move). Steve’s mention of “all the Sonic characters we’re going to reveal that are considered playable” seems to imply we might see other characters by way of NPCs, stickers and vehicle upgrades. Fingers crossed for an Omochao paint scheme. Fans of Big the Cat will notice his absence, but think of it this way: the loss of Big makes the first All-Stars Racing game all the more special.

the only Sonic characters that matter
True. I’d personally replace Shadow but I know he has a fanbase. I’d prefer Vector/Espio/Charmy in a three character vehicle.
All Sonic characters but not all Sonic Team characters? Just a thought.
Well, yeah, all Sonic characters. Still is possible to see Chu Chus and Billy again (hoping no Billy) or a PSO racer (hoping for a rappy).
A rappy would be glorious 🙂
Ristar is the one character from Sonic Team they should add but will never include. PSO racer? Nah… There’s plenty of characters from the original series on the Mega Drive. I’d pick Nei myself.
It’s really disappointing to see yet another missed chance to have a great Sega roster. If the Football Manager character rumour is true… Man, I don’t even know what to say…
This is good news indeed.
I like this core cast. Main character (Sonic, obviously), three friends (one sidekick, one friendly rival, one love interest) and three enemies (main villain, friendly rival, evil doppelganger). Blaze, Rouge, Cream and Big are just unnecessary. Chaotix are cool as an extension of Knuckles, but are not needed.
I’d still lose shadow. He contributes nothing. We already have a friendly rival and that’s knuckles.
Not surprised really, although I wouldn’t mind Blaze as she’s the only modern Sonic character that isn’t disliked.
Does this mean that the remaining 8 or so tracks are all Sonic tracks?
Food for thought since SEGA usually do something good before letting us know the bad.
That’s actually fine by me, I’m kinda glad they didn’t go over-board with the Sonic characters. I love the Sonic series more than any other Sega game by far, but less Sonic characters gives more variety to the roster. I’m a fan of characters like Silver, Blaze, Omega, etc., but these are really the “main” characters, and the only ones that are really necessary. It would’ve been cool to bring Nack back on his hover-bike, but that would’ve never happened…
What, no Big?! That makes me sad. 🙁
Damn it, no Vector. Getting tired of the generic Hero side cast. Dark side could’ve been spiced up, maybe throw in one more person, making it 4 for 4.
And.. I liked using Big. Oh well.
there is no hero side or dark side. That malarky died with sonic heroes.
Random thought: I think it would’ve been interesting to see one of the following for this game: Rouge the Bat, Blaze the Cat, Silver, Mighty the Armadillo or Bean the Duck. Or also Jet the Hawk would’ve been beast too. I’m hoping The Prince of Hell from Hell Yeah! will be DLC or something.
