Mobile games that no longer meet SEGA’s standards to be removed from app stores in the coming weeks

Via the SEGA Blog comes news that a number of games from their back catalog will be removed from the App Store, the Google Play Store, the Samsung App Store and the Amazon App Store in the coming weeks. The reasoning for this is to remove titles that no longer meet their revised standards. While games you have already purchased will be available to download and play again, these select titles will soon no longer be for sale. What are these titles that SEGA plans to purge? We don’t know at this point, but I’d wager a guess that many of the older titles including those that have had issues on the newest devices are on the chopping block. SEGA did state, however, that some titles may return in an updated form.

While it is always a shame to see older titles removed, one of the major downsides to digital titles, it is nice of SEGA to give advanced warning. Also, this could be a sign of SEGA of America stepping things up in the quality department. I’d guess that the axed titles will likely be the old badly emulated Genesis/Mega Drive games and SEGA Columns Deluxe.

Check out SEGA’s full statement after the break and stay tuned to SEGAbits for what these soon to be removed titles are.

At SEGA we are committed to making fun, high-quality mobile games and it is with our fans’ best playing experience in mind that we announce the removal of a number of games from our back catalogue. It is important for us to ensure that all of our fans, regardless of platform or operating system, have a great playing experience and after evaluating our complete list of titles, we have determined that a number of them no longer meet our standards. As a result, we will be removing these titles from the App Store for Apple devices, the Google Play Store, the Samsung App Store and the Amazon App Store over the next few weeks. While we have nothing to announce at this time, given the right situation, these titles may return in an updated form.

If you have already purchased a game that is being removed from the store you will be able to continue to play it after it’s been taken down. It will remain in your purchased apps where you will be able to download it again if you delete it or acquire a new device until the game becomes incompatible with the latest phone operating systems or hardware.

Thank you to all our customers for sharing what they love about our games and helping us to continue to improve everything we make.

Calling it now: Sonic 4 Episode 1.

“Regardless of platform”?! They haven’t made anything for Windows Phones in YEARS (aside from Sonic Dash).

Hope they don’t remove anything from the Windows Phone and 8 stores. When developers delist apps or games there, you can’t re-download them. If you lose your copy, you’re out of luck.

Finally they decided to abandon mobile gaming?

Did you read the article? They are removing old apps that do not meet their new standards – likely apps that no longer function and apps that hurt the brand like the cheap Genesis ROMs. SEGA is not abandoning mobile gaming.

Well, since their mobile production is all below standard, I thought they were finally throwing the towel, lol.
      Guess what are their standards…

Then hopefully their standards are very high.
