Just throwing this out there since you mentioned wondering where the human characters are – there are two worlds in the main Sonic series according to SEGA. There’s Sonic’s world, and the human world. Certain games like Sonic Adventure take place on the human world, and other games like the classic games, Lost World, and Sonic Forces take place on Sonic’s world. That’s why GUN wasn’t present in Sonic Forces.

The methods of how and why the characters cross between the two worlds hasn’t really been established, but supposedly it’s always been that way.

Ian Flynn has confirmed that he has to use SEGA’s “two worlds” canon with the comic series.
