SEGA introduces ‘Sonic 2020 Initiative’, to announce Sonic the Hedgehog news on the 20th of every month

Guys, the year is 2020, its the future and in this future a handful of announcements aren’t enough. SEGA has officially launched the “Sonic 2020” project, a new initiative to announce various new Sonic the Hedgehog-related plans and information throughout the year.

What’s the first bit of news on January 20th? Well, of course the project itself. I bet Sonic Team are patting themselves on the back for this one. The Sonic Channel also released some art for the announcement which features social media assets and even 21 character icons. The press release for this does mention that SEGA will hold various Sonic the Hedgehog events in 2020; so keep an eye out.

I’m no Detective Conan, but don’t be shocked if we get a musical event with Tee Lopes and Crush 40, since the Sonic the Hedgehog social media has been releasing remixed tunes.

Tee Lopes this, Tee Lopes that… what did the guy even do that deserves this level of promotion and recognition? A bunch of questionable remixes of other people’s songs and about as many original songs as there are original zones in Sonic Mania (and there isn’t a lot)… Did he do it all for free that Sega keeps pushing him so hard?
Jun Senoue has been composing Sonic music since, what, 1994/1995? Crush 40 has been composing music that defined the childhoods of thousands of people since 1998, Richard Jacques has stuck with Sega for nearly the entire Saturn generation. Not to mention the countless Japanese composers that still work on music for Sega. Tee Lopes didn’t do squat by comparison, so him being put on the pedestal like this by both Sega and the fandom is really confusing.

Is this comment from Richard Jacques? Sounds a lot like the tweet he made about the Sonic R remix a couple of months ago.

Face it. It’s the objective truth. What did he do to deserve this level of promotion? Even Jun Senoue plays second fiddle when Tee Lopes is involved. His music a substrate for Tee Lopes’ success. Sponsored by Sega.
Sadly the entire Sonic fanbase is so enamored with Tee Lopes’ same sounding trumpet-filled remixes of other people’s music you can’t say a bad thing about him without being crucified.
And no, I’m not Richard Jacques, though I wish I was.

      Okay, Richard

I feel you anon — I get too wrapped up in this stuff too, wishing Sega and the industry would go back to the way they were when they suited our tastes and interests more, but you’ve gotta take a step back and realize that you just wrote a massive rant on the way a musician is being promoted by a video game company to their fanbase.

You make good points — great points, even. I almost always agree at least on some level with what you write in the comments on this site, but seriously, it’s been, what, 16 years since Sega got bought out and fired most of their original staff?

Things go away. It sucks, but it’s true. Do something you enjoy. Learn a skill and make your own cool, inspired content like you used to enjoy from Sega. Don’t let that inspiration die just because Bernie Stolar and Sony and fickle fanbases cut a good company down.

      Subvert the negative energy.
