Maybe its the recent voice cast departure news, or maybe I’ve softened on the now cancelled “new branch” of the Sonic franchise, but I have to admit I was really happy to learn today that not only will Sonic Boom season 2 receive a Volume 1 DVD release (with a Volume 2 to follow) but there will also be a Sonic Boom season 1 blu-ray release. Longtime readers of the site know I’m a physical media guy, and I like me my Sonic. So to have every piece of Sonic animation on my shelf, no matter how much I dislike it (I’m looking at you, Underground) I want to own it. When Sonic Boom released, soon after we saw a smattering of episodes released through some real wacky methods. Handfuls of episodes were randomly grouped on promotional DVDs and bargain bin releases. It wasn’t until 2019 that we started seeing proper season releases with Season 1, Vol. 1 and Season 1, Vol. 2 DVD sets. These were bundled with two TOMY action figures each, or were available at a lower price without the toys. Given how hard it is to find Sonic Boom toys nowadays, it’s an easy way to build up a collection.
Things were pretty quiet throughout 2020 on the home video front, but just in time for Sonic’s 30th anniversary fans will be able to get their hands on Sonic Boom Season 2, Vol. 1, in both action figure pack ($24.99) and standard release ($14.99) versions, as well as Sonic Boom Season 1 in a 3-disc blu-ray set ($34.99). All three releases will arrive on May 4th, 2021.
