Nintendo has posted the most downloaded games on the Nintendo Switch so far for 2023. The list was really surprising, since it seems people are really buying re-releases of older games with Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection Vol. 1 and 2 made the rankings in the top ten. But on the SEGA side, the most interesting part is that the top 30 downloaded Nintendo Switch games, no Sonic the Hedgehog game made the list.
Though Atlus made the list twice with both Persona 4 Golden (13) and Persona 3 Portable (19) which I consider a big success for these re-releases. Why didn’t Sonic make the list? Good question, SEGA did release Sonic Origins Plus, it came out at the end of June which could mean that the game hasn’t had enough time to sell enough to make the top 30. I guess we will see in the end of the year when the list is re-released to see how that game performed. The surprising part is that Sonic Frontiers hasn’t continued to have the legs on Switch, what with all the free updates happening. I guess most Sonic gamers opted out to play it on beefier hardware?

I recall playing the Sonic Frontiers demo on my Switch prior to its release and thinking that it would look better on my PC, so I wouldn’t be surprised if other gamers felt the same. SEGA publicly stated that Sonic Frontiers was a financial hit, so people definitely supported the game and likely continue to support the game.
To be honest, a little bit pleased with this news I have to confess, I’m sick and tired of hearing Sonic and Nintendo in the same sentence, along with Switch port begging. This really illustrates what I’ve always known, that Switch is first and foremost for Nintendo fans, and Sonic isn’t really a title that appeals to that crowd despite how popular Sonic is overall. I was always against the Nintendo-esque influence that was foisted on some Sonic games, where Nintendo fans expected Sonic to be more like Nintendo style IPs rather than how he originally was and should be as quintessential Sega style IP, notable examples of this with games like Sonic Colours, Sonic Lost World and Sonic Boom etc, Sonic wasn’t designed to be like Nintendo, he was designed ad Swga’s signature mascot character and to be as opposite to Mario as possible.

Finally, about Sonic Frontiers in particular, Nintendo fans endlessly comparing it to Zelda Breath of the Wild instead of Sega’s other key franchise – Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis in terms of asset styles gets equally tiring.
The other thing that annoys me about Switch in particular, is due to Nintendo’s policies, this has had a detrimental effect on the development of Sonic Frontiers (much like Microsoft’s had on the development of Sonic 06 in 2006 when Microsoft preassured for a rush launch of the game so that the Xbox 360 would have a key high IP title to make the Christmas period, therefore convincing Sega to abandone a far superior build they had been working on since the E3 show that year), because the Switch is designed the way it is closer to a gimmick than a high end console, and with Sonic Frontiers being multiplatform, this means to lacked optimisation for any one specific hardware, and had to be toned down considerably on all platforms in order to be compatible with Switch as well.
Sega should take a good long look at this list. Then they should go away, and finally port ALL of the Shining Force games to then Switch.
Here’s why (this is what the list tells us):
• People like RPGs (Final Fantasy, Persona)
• People like retro releases (Final Fantasy, Mega Man)
• People like Tactical RPGs (Fire Emblem)
• People are bored of Sonic (NO Sonic on list)
Do the maths Sega.
Shining Force Feather!
