Jakks Pacific reveals first wave of Walmart exclusive SEGA action figures featuring Streets of Rage, Super Monkey Ball and Altered Beast

SEGA has been slowly dropping reveals of new SEGA action figures from Jakks Pacific on social media, and thanks to SEGA employee Mike Cisneros it has been confirmed that the first wave of figures has been fully revealed. Releasing exclusively at Walmart stores, the characters are Axel Stone from Streets of Rage, Aiai from Super Monkey Ball and the Werewolf transformation from Altered Beast. In addition to multiple points of articulation, the figures will also come packed with accessories. While Axel has seen a premium figure released featuring his Streets of Rage 4 look, the upcoming figure from Jakks Pacific is the first time (to my knowledge) that his original Genesis/Mega Drive look has been given a figure. Aiai, meanwhile, is no stranger to action figures, as he and some of his monkey friends had figures released by GamePro and JoyRide Studios around 20 years ago. The Werewolf form from Altered Beast has seen statues and vinyl toys, but this would be his first action figure release.

We should be seeing these at stores and hopefully online in the coming weeks, and if they sell well enough we should see a wave two! In the comments, let us know what SEGA characters you’d like to see in action figure form!

These look great! I wonder how the werewolf will look from the side as all these shots are straight on.

I think it would be cool for there Super to be a Super Monkey Ball character in each wave, but I’m betting they’ll stick to one character per franchise for a bit. That older line by Joyride had the balls (no pun intended) included, but this could almost be like more recent Sonic figures with little action environments included.

The nice thing about Jakks is these should be available at a lower price point so people may be willing to pick up a lot of characters that they’re not already a huge fan of as long as the quality is there.

    Would love to see:

Opa Opa, dragon rider and dragoon (Panzer Dragoon), and Temjin fro Virtual On.

Axel would be better if he actually was the 1/18th scale that he claims to be. The review I saw showed him to be 5 inches instead of the 4 inch scale that even his packaging states. The werewolf is also in this scale but it works since werewolves usually (especially in Altered Beast) are larger than their human counterparts.

I get that people are a little perturbed that the figures aren’t 1:18 scale as advertised but in their defense, the 1:15 or 5” scale rather is a better representation of the time period that these game characters came from. The 5” scale is a call back to the late 80’s and throughout the 90’s, this was the standard action figure scale of the time period. So, if someone wanted to set these guys up with any vehicle/playset and figs from then: tmnt, the real ghostbusters, batman the animated series, gargoyles, the toxic avenger, mmpr, for example they’d fit in perfectly. As well as the Bst axn loyal subjects lines including some incendium fig biz as well. Accompany all that with some jakks pacific world of Nintendo 5” figs and you got yourself a whole Saturday morning cartoons/video game day straight from your childhood, if you had grown up then anyways. Me personally, 5” scale is my go too for many of the reasons mentioned so I’m a little biased on whether or not they’d be able to fit into a 90’s turtle van or ecto-1 and are truly representative of the time period. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea since so many companies have changed their scaling and it seems to go up and down all the time which can be frustrating for collectors, but for me like I said it’s nice to see some companies stay true to certain concepts and do some things that other companies simply aren’t doing. I went to Walmart yesterday and was actually a little mad at these retro figs Nacelle put out, they’re some retro figs from the late 80’s and some from biker mice from mars, the scaling was so huge like in between 1:12 and 1:10 that they looked laughable. The quality wasn’t even that great either, I’ve seen better paint application on gi-joe 1:18 figs and the packaging was simply ridiculous and not in a good way. The cost of the bikes for the mice from mars considering their scale is going to be an entire paycheck when they release. With that scale, unless you’re a diehard fan, no one is going to invest in that. So in many cases toy companies should take note from others such as jakks, Bst axn, and playmates for that matter. Thanks for sticking with me this long if you’re still here. Good luck collecting and god bless.
