Here comes a new challenge on Genesis/Mega-Drive. Pocket Bravery, a modern, independent 2D fighting game by Brazillian developer Statera Studio, has an official 16-bit port being worked on for the Genesis. The port is being handled by RheoGamer, himself a Brazillian developer, who had previously ported Real Bout Fatal Fury to Genesis and is already hard at work on his own Genesis port of X-Men vs. Street Fighter and an original King of Fighters Genesis game. Needless to say, this makes him the perfect candidate for porting a game that was already clearly inspired by the best of Capcom and SNK’s fighting game pedigree. Never underestimate the love Brazil has for the old school Sega, Capcom, or SNK.

Chances are you might not be familiar with Pocket Bravery. It’s a fighter that was released on Steam in 2023, with ports to modern consoles, as well as a GOG release, also on the way. The game features an eclectic cast of 13 characters in its base version, with 3 DLC characters and stages available separately and a 4th of each also yet to be released. The game expands on the look and presentation of fighting games on the Neo-Geo Pocket and Capcom’s own arcade fighter classic Super Gem Fighter Mini-Mix (1997) (Also known as Pocket Fighter). It does, however, include the trappings you usually see in modern fighting games, including special moves, special cancels, devastating finishing moves, and online multiplayer with rollback netcode. A demo is also available on Steam right now to try on Windows, Mac, Linux, or Steam Deck.
News of this port was made in a Statera Studios livestream (Hope you understand Brazilian Portuguese), featuring Producer Johnathon Silva and Creative Director Anderson Halfeld. According to Silva, the Genesis port is still early in development, but he is very impressed with RheoGamer’s work translating the game to Genesis hardware so far. The livestream includes footage of the game in action, featuring characters Nuno Alves and Mingmei Wong locked in combat, as well as a look at some other work-in-progress character sprites. You can also see early footage of the Genesis port in the below tweet from RheoGamer.

For now, no release schedule has been made for the Genesis port (or even the modern console ports or GOG release, which were originally slated for 2023). When more news comes out on the Genesis port, you can bet that you’ll hear about it right here at SegaBits, where the hip and happening Sega fans congregate. For now, check out the original version of the game on Steam and see for yourself what it’s like.
