OutRun Film in the Works at Universal Pictures with Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney Attached to the Project

With numerous SEGA franchises receiving film and TV adaptations following the massive success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, this latest announcement comes as a surprise: Universal Pictures is developing a feature adaptation of SEGA AM2’s iconic arcade driving game, OutRun, with Michael Bay attached to direct and Sydney Sweeney onboard as a producer. The script will be written by Jayson Rothwell for the upcoming film.

Michael Bay will also produce the OutRun film alongside his longtime collaborator, Brad Fuller, through their Platinum Dunes banner. The project is currently in development, and as of now, Sweeney is only confirmed to produce. Sonic the Hedgehog film series producer Toru Nakahara will also produce the film on behalf of SEGA, with Sega Corporation President/COO Shuji Utsumi overseeing the project.

Could we be in for a high-octane road trip romance filled with scenic coastlines, neon nostalgia, and explosive action? Let us know your thoughts on the upcoming OutRun movie in the comments below!

Hm, was this really published on April 21st and no April 1st? It sound really strange – OutRun doens’t seem like movie material and Michael Bay, well. But if this means revival of the brand and at least a remaster of OutRun 2, i’m in!

OutRun was based on The Cannonball Run, so it’s coming full circle!

But yeah, a guy and girl going for a drive through scenic locations against a time-limit isn’t exactly a plot. Turbo Outrun with the Porsche 959 competitor has a bit more “plot” I guess.

Will the film end with a funny sequence as the car crosses the line, as per the game? 😀

It is true that movies based on Need for Speed and Gran Turismo were also produced, but I personally hate them both. I feel OutRun could be good only if made as a smaller, more niche film, but that’s not going to happen with Michael Bay. So, I really just hope for any remasered/new OutRun game.

What we need is a crazy taxi movie directed by Edgar Wright. Essentially baby driver but with offspring and bad religion for the entire soundtrack.

Aww man. Crazy Taxi by Edgar Wright would be frickin peak!!! Baby Driver was so good!!! Funny enough, I remember Richard Donner (RIP)really wanted to do a Crazy Taxi film back in the day.Ah… alas, the road not taken… sigh 😔

Funny enough I was just playing outrun on my switch 2 days ago, Strange isn’t it?!😆🦔 If this film ever hits the silver screen then expect exhilarating car chases and plenty of explosions! XD I love Michael Bay films, especially the transformers films, Bad boys 1 and 2, 13 hours, the island, ambulance, and last but certainly not least, The supposed unauthorized Sean Connery bond film The Rock, which funny enough has a ferrari in the film which would’ve fit perfectly in an outrun film adaptation! I also have to agree with you Stepan, I really hope this means we’ll get a re-release of most if not all of the outrun games later down the road. Especially outrun 2/2006! fingers crossed! 🤞
