Just what the Dreamcast needed: Space Bunnies!

The niche Neo-Geo classic from Visco, Bang² Busters (That’s Bang-squared, so “Bang Bang Busters”), is finally receiving an official sequel courtesy of Pixelheart games, a longtime publisher of indie games on Dreamcast. Bang² Busters 2 is being developed for Neo-Geo AES/MVS as well as Sega Dreamcast, but first, the team has turned to Kickstarter to fund the project.

As of this writing, they have 22 days left to raise $40,378 USD and are a little over halfway there. If you’re interested in helping them reach that goal and securing your own copy of the game, check below the break for more info.

UPDATE: Rejoice! The game was successfully funded on November 30th, 2025. They managed to raise $47,527.

Bang² Busters was originally made for Neo-Geo hardware, but went unreleased during the Neo-Geo’s heyday. Pixelheart games had previously produced new official physical copies of Bang² Busters and Visco’s other Neo-Geo games on all Neo-Geo systems as well as Dreamcast. Copies for the latter console are still available to purchase today, with JoshProd handling production outside of Europe. Visco’s Neo-Geo games on Dreamcast ran on the console by way of a Neo-Geo emulator for Dreamcast, but for Bang² Busters 2, a special native Dreamcast port will be made alongside the Neo-Geo version. This version will make use of Dreamcast’s more unique hardware advantages over Neo-Geo, such as a bigger color palette and CD enhanced music. Versions for Steam and Nintendo Switch are also in development. Copies for all versions of the game are up for grabs as Kickstarter rewards.

Bang² Busters 2, like the original, centers around two rabbit space police officers. The male rabbit is Lazy (Not literally. That’s his name.) and the female is Refia. In this game, a new interstellar amusement park called Happy Universe has opened its doors to the public. It seems like a fun vacation spot for our heroes, until they learn the park is being run by their adversary from the original game, Emperor Honey, and that he’s turned people into stuffed animals within the park. Lazy and Refia take up arms to confront Emperor Honey’s generals and then the maniacal emperor himself to free the captives and save the galaxy.

The game, again like the original, is a single screen arcade action game similar to Bubble Bobble, Snow Bros., or Tumblepop. Alone or partnered with a friend, players control Lazy and/or Refia. The goal of each stage is to clear out all the enemies before time runs out and without letting them beat you instead. Lazy and Rafia do this by first punching the enemies, then throwing them at the other enemies while they’re stunned. Take out multiple enemies with a single stunned enemy and pick up the items they drop for extra points and other advantages.

New to Bang² Busters 2 is a new modern control scheme that brings up an arrow to help you aim enemies when you throw them for more precision. A classic control setup is also available that more closely matches the original control from Bang² Busters, for anyone already experienced with that game.

Pixelheart have already prepared a demo of Bang² Busters 2 for you to download and try. The demo is only of the Neo-Geo version, so it requires that you play it in a Neo-Geo emulator or on an original Neo-Geo AES console or MVS arcade system. Still, it’ll be great to get a feel for how the game plays and to see if you like it. Pixelheart is also open to feedback from the demo to help them finetune the game perfectly, so don’t be afraid to give them your thoughts after trying the demo.

All the Kickstarter pledges entitle you to a digital certificate, some wallpaper images for your desktop or mobile devices, and a digital game key for Steam or Nintendo Switch. Getting just those will only cost you $14 USD. A Dreamcast copy is the next priciest option at $41 for either a North American or Japanese copy of the game, while a European copy for PAL Dreamcast systems costs you $58 (or €50). All Dreamcast versions are region free, however, so it doesn’t matter what Dreamcast console you own as long as it is MIL-CD compatible. The regional differences are only in the style of packaging. Pledges for Dreamcast copies also come with a digital game soundtrack. Finally, copies of the various Neo-Geo cartridge versions of the game will cost you no less than $289 and from there, there are pledges featuring different combinations of the Neo-Geo and Dreamcast versions. Those prices do not include delivery costs, which are different depending on your country or region.

As usual, however, remember that Kickstarter is not to be thought of as a simple store. You are funding the continued development of an unfinished product to help see it through to completion and, hopefully, have it reach your hands and the hands of other consumers after some time. Anything can happen during development, and nothing, not even refunds if things go badly, is guaranteed. Of course, Pixelheart is a studio with a lot of history, experience, and passion behind them, so they’re not likely to take your money and run. Just be prepared to wait a while to see your game. With that out of the way, you can check out the Kickstarter page here to read more information, down load the demo, and to make your pledge.

Does this look like a game you’d wanna add to your Dreamcast or Neo-Geo collection? Did you play the original Bang² Busters? What did you think of it? Did you like the sequel’s demo if you’ve tried it? Give us the lowdown in the comments below.

You can also still buy Bang² Busters on Dreamcast from Video Games New York, Stone Age Gamer, or Play-Asia.

New Dreamcast stuff is always appreciated, but would be nice to see more of the Dreamcast’s capabilites used for a change, and other genres also. the Dreamcast’s post market phase is bigger than ever, more people should be more familiar with the Dreamcast’s development kit tools.
