CAPCOM says Nintendo 3DS launch is as Exciting as the Dreamcast launch

Even though this statement does focus on the Nintendo 3DS launch, it’s nice to see that the guys at Capcom still worthship the great times they had with the Dreamcast. Recently Yoshinori Ono told the EDGE magazine, that the Nintendo 3DS launch is as exciting as the one of Sega Dreamcast back then.

“First, we are in Nintendo country. Second, the feeling I have with 3DS is the same as when the Dreamcast came out – as a developer, I mean, these machines are so exciting. We’re fascinated by it at Capcom, and diving into the innards at the moment, but you know there’s just so much more there to unlock; it’s got more to give.”

Conduit 3DS Incoming

High Voltage Software confirmed they were doing 3DS work during an interview SEGAbits conducted on behalf of Conduit Portal during PAX. Apparently it’s a Conduit project!

This is what High Voltage chief creative officer Eric Nofsinger had to say to EuroGamer:

“We are very much pulling over this engine and this technology on this new hardware. We’re still early. The resolution is definitely lower, but the screen real estate is smaller so it balances out. We’ve not had a lot of severe optimisation yet, but we’re going to be able to have something very close to this [Conduit 2] on the 3DS probably by GDC. We’ve got environments from this already up and running around. You can shoot, you can select different weapons and you can see enemies. It runs pretty darn well with full 3D and everything. I would guess that SEGA will be interested. I had a nice conversation just yesterday with their head of artist and repertoire. At DICE, the conference in Vegas that’s coming up, we’ll probably have some more chats. We’re very excited about that system and what we’re going to be be able to do on it. The work we’ve done with the Wii, we’re going to have a serious leg up. It’s quite different than developing for the DS and the DSi. Developers like us that have more of a console experience on GameCube and on Wii are going to be able to take advantage of the 3D better and they’re going to be able to do a little bit more with the hardware than people who are coming at it from the straight DS angle and used to doing more 2D, or very limited 3D, kinds of things. There’s nothing like it at all (on 3DS). We can be a shining star on this.”High Voltage’s Eric Nofsinger

It is currently unknown whether this is a port or an all new game. Here’s hoping HVS is able to take the lessons learned from Conduit and it’s upcoming sequel and apply it to this.

A look at Super Monkey Ball 3DS’s fight mode & new stage

One of the modes in the upcoming Super Monkey Ball 3D (or as we call it 3DS, we are cool like that) is Fight Mode. You start off in a level with other friends, you can pick up bananas, whoever has the most when the time runs out wins. Issue? You can hit each other and steal bananas from opposing players.

Every player has the “Banana Shake”, which shakes bananas from the other player, issue is that you lose some bananas too. During play there will appear a “Golden Barrel” somewhere on the level, the monkey to get the tenth hit will get a super power. If you fall off the playing field, you also lose a ton of bananas and will have to make your way back on. An example shown is you falling on a pirate ship, using the canon to blast yourself back into play.

Reminds me a bit of Power Stone. As for the new stage, it is a ‘spooky’ themed one. Its called “Bananightmare”. You can check that out in the gallery, after the jump. The first four photos are of the new stage.

SEGA cancels Thor PSP game, no one cares

SEGA has just revealed that the PSP version of their upcoming Thor game,  Thor: God of Thunder, will not be released.

The PSP version of Thor was being developed in-house, but don’t fear, the development has been moved to the 3DS. But with such short notice on the change, I think this game will probably be rushed… just like SEGA’s other Marvel movie games.

Yuji Naka’s new game might come west as ‘Rodea the Sky Soldier’

Yuji Naka’s latest adventure game with Prope has been announced in Japan, it is called Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea. But that name is not very good for a western port, not at all. So the publisher, Kadokawa Games copyrighted the name ‘Rodea the Sky Soldier’ in America.

The odd thing is Kadokawa Games doesn’t have a US branch. This game might be brought over by another publisher, maybe NIS America or XSeed.

Have some screens and art that the publisher released in their latest press conference in Japan.

Yuji Naka’s action game called Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea

Yuji Naka has teased this action game before, and now in the latest issue of Famitsu he goes into detail about his latest creation. The game will be called Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea, and like we already know, it will be sky based. The story will be written by Takumi Miyajima (Tales of Symphonia/Tales of the Abyss).

The game will let you take to the skies and shoot enemies, and it’s also said to feature ‘non flying levels’. Even though Yuji Naka originally teased this as his ‘HD action game’ it is actually heading to the Wii/3DS. So another Nintendo exclusive.

Enjoy the scans! Game is being published by Kadokawa Games, not SEGA. Just to let you guys know.

Crush being ported to the 3DS? [Update]

Crush is one of the most underrated SEGA published games this generation. It was released on the PSP and received no hype, which is too bad. It is a great game that EVERYONE should play.

It seems that SEGA will give the franchise another chance, posted at GoNintendo, SEGA will be porting the PSP title to 3DS. I think that Crush would be prefect for the 3DS, with its touch pad and 3D visuals. Filing it as a rumor till we get a SEGA go ahead that it’s official.

We have been told by SEGA that this is indeed true, no press release or details to share right now.

Super Monkey Ball 3DS Announcement Trailer

Check out the western announcement trailer for Super Monkey Ball 3DS! The trailer is all CGI and highlights the three games that will feature in Super Monkey Ball 3DS, classic Monkey Ball rolling, Monkey Fight and Monkey Race. There also seems to be a new bad guy on the block!

I’ve been a monkey ball fan since the first game but I’ve avoided the series since Monkey Ball Deluxe. This is due to the direction the series has taken, using the party games as more of a gimmick to show off a new control scheme instead of focusing on what’s important. Making fun, fleshed out games.

Super Monkey Ball 3DS seems to have returned to the ‘quality over quantity’ notion, and Monkey Fight and Monkey Race, two of my favourite party games, have returned,  although they seem to have new gameplay mechanics. But unfortunately my favourite party game of the lot, Monkey Target is absent!

Super Monkey Ball 3DS Japanese boxart & release date

This is basically what you’d expect from a Super Monkey Ball game cover. It has those cute monkeys you love, though this one seems to be showing more of a cut out art style. Reminds me of Kirby’s Epic Yarn sort of.

Even though Super Monkey Ball 3DS was one of the first shown and one of the first games to get gameplay footage online, it will not be a launch title for the hardware, at least in Japan. Nintendo put up their official line up of games and it excluded this title.

The title will actually launch in Japan on March 3rd, one week after the 3DS is out. Reason for this? No idea.

Super Monkey Ball 3DS Trailer

The first trailer for Super Monkey Ball 3DS has arrived.

There isn’t a whole lot to say about the trailer, you can’t tell how well the 3D works on a PC monitor so I can’t really comment on that. I do, however like the tropical sounding music going on!

I’m more interested in this Monkey Ball then other recent ones however, as this one’s being developed by the original team in Japan. One thing I will mention is that I hope those red rails that stop you falling out of the level do not stick around past the first few stages. I want at least SOME challenge!

Finally I really, really hope that the mini games are fun and fleshed out again. I don’t know about anyone else but the mini games in Super Monkey Ball 1, 2 and Deluxe are what kept me and my friends coming back time and time again. In more recent monkey in ball related outings the mini games have been quantity before quality, often serving as more of a tech demo for what ever control gimmick they have been designed around and not fun mini games.

Let’s hope we can trust the original team to get the (monkey) ball rolling again… Yeah, I went there!

Super Monkey Ball 3DS Japanese site opens

The Super Monkey Ball 3DS website  has now open and with it is a few bits of information about the upcoming 3DS game. As most of you know, this is most likely going to end up being a 3DS launch title and will be launching this spring.

Confirmed modes:

  • Monkey Ball: What you come to expect from the games, single player mode that has you rolling and collecting bananas.
  • Monkey Race: Car racing where you can use power ups to screw up the other player. Up to 4 players can join in on the race.
  • Monkey Fight: You fight other monkeys, seems to look very much like Super Smash Bros. Object is to take their bananas.  Up to 4 players can play! Screen below.

As for playable characters, the site has 8 character slots, but only half of them are shown. Those shown are AiAi, MeeMee, Baby and Gongon.

7th Dragon developer teaming up with SEGA again

[Teaser image for upcoming game]

Imageepoch Inc. had a huge conference in Japan where they announced a bunch of titles. How many is a bunch? Like 8 titles, not including the SEGA published one. Now that is a ton of work. They also announced they are ‘publishing’ titles now. But just because they are publisher, they aren’t a developer for hire.
If you remember 7th Dragon, a DS RPG that never made it to America, released in 2009. Well, they developed it. They announced they have another RPG to announce and SEGA will be publishing. The game should be out in the middle of 2011 (So spring/summer?). When the announcement was made, the over world theme of 7th Dragon was playing, could this be a possible sequel?

Most likely the title will be announced for Nintendo’s 3DS platform, since SEGA said they had 6 3DS titles planned for 2011. Will we get this one in America? Maybe.

SEGA has 2 new Phantasy Star trademarks, we get excited anyway

There are two things that excite me in the world, a good looking girl holding a bottle of beer and upcoming SEGA games. Actually, a good looking girl holding a bottle of beer and a upcoming SEGA game would be ultimate.

SEGA has trademarked two video game names for the Phantasy Star series, Phantasy Star: Eternal Planets and Phantasy Star: Eternal Hunters. Sounds like they will have two versions of the same game? Like Pokemon?

Who knows, but I would not be shocked if this turns out to be a 3DS game. If it is, can it be a RPG and not an online RPG? We have plenty of those!

SEGA’s Julian Mehlfeld Answers Criticisms of SMB 3DS’s Graphics

So, some of you may have noticed that the screenshots for Super Monkey Ball’s 3DS entry don’t look so hot. They look bad even, which is odd considering the brief snippet of the game seen in the 3DS’s software line up video looked rather nice. In response to the criticism of the screenshots on the SEGA Forum, SEGA Rep Julian Mehlfeld, under his forum name “Clumsyorchid”, had this to say:

Not sure why the screens went out at that resolution to be honest, the game doesn’t really look like that as evidenced in the video:

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/nc…ndo-3ds/705394
(skip to 1:45)

Shame is all assets go out without the 3D component – but the game looks good, no worries there.

So it seems the screenshots look the way they do due to being blown up way past their intended resolution. Mehlfeld intends to look into issue to ensure it doesn’t happen again in the future.

SEGA has 6 3DS titles planned for 2011

SEGA has revealed that they are planning to release six 3DS titles for their 2011 fiscal year (ending on March 2012). Out of the 6 titles, we know two of them, Super Monkey Ball and a Sonic title.

Since there are four titles that we know nothing about (not that we know much about the Sonic title, other than its a Sonic game), what do you think they will be?

Mike Hayes has stated they would like to do a House of the Dead and Aliens vs. Predator game on 3DS
