We’re excited to announce that SEGAbits and Sonic Retro will be hosting a panel at Too Many Games 2014 on Saturday, June 28th at 12pm in Oaks, PA! Dubbed “Surviving the Dreamcast Apocalypse: SEGA Fans in the 21st Century”, the panel is to feature SEGAbits admin and writer Barry the Nomad, Sonic Retro admin and writer David the Lurker, creator of the YouTube series “My Life with SEGA” A.J. Rosa, and SEGAbits writer and The Website of the Dead owner Kori-Maru as they discuss that fateful day when SEGA discontinued the Dreamcast, and where both the company and its fans ended up over ten years later.

Highlights of this SEGA celebration include stories from SEGAbits and Sonic Retro, rare materials from the development of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and unseen clips from the “My Life with SEGA” series! Whether you’ve lived and breathed SEGA’s blue skies since you could hold a game controller, or have just recently been welcomed into the next level, this is the panel for you. Scream it with me now: “SEGA!”

We’ll also be hosting a SEGA trivia contest at the panel, with rare SEGA prizes to hand out as rewards for your knowledge!

Presenting the My Life with SEGA: The Next Level/No Limits VCD Trailer!

In January we premiered the My Life with SEGA short film No Limits and announced a special Video CD release of the short film, and the previous My Life with SEGA short film The Next Level, featuring a retro SEGA CD Saturn plastic box design. In anticipation of the upcoming release, A.J. has put together a slick trailer featuring clips from the short films and reviews (Panzer Dragoon, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Virtual-On) as well as VCD package shots.

My Life with SEGA Season 2 ends with a SEGA Saturn classic – Die Hard: Arcade

My Life with SEGA season 2 ends with punches, kicks, and several explosions as Mickey Mac and I take on the SEGA Saturn classic Die Hard: Arcade in a 2-Man Scramble! With season 2 over, what’s next for My Life with SEGA? I’ll be taking a break from the series as of now to concentrate on other projects. However, don’t think for a moment that My Life with SEGA is dead.

Next season is going to change things up where I’m sharing more single-player games with friends, like Mickey Mac, Lauren and others. I’ll do some straight reviews with big name titles (yes, Shenmue II), but this will be more freeform from Season 3 onward. Also, The Next Level/No Limits VCD: Special Edition is still in the works.

A big thanks to everyone – my family, friends, fans and SEGAbits – for keeping My Life with SEGA alive and well. It’s amazing to think that, come September 11th, it will be celebrating its 3rd birthday. I love you all, and I thank you from deep down in the cockles of my heart…. maybe below the cockles. Maybe even in the sub-cockle area. Maybe in the liver. Maybe in the kidneys. Maybe even in the colon. I don’t know.

My Life with SEGA’s Streets of Rage three parter comes to an end in the midst of Streets of Rage week at SEGAbits! In part one we looked back on one of the best beat ’em ups to grace SEGA’s 16-bit machine. In part two, Jimmy Mac and myself tackled two player mode for a 2-Man Scramble. Now we take a look at the sequels that followed, the appropriately named Streets of Rage 2 and Streets of Rage 3. My Life with SEGA bares his knuckles in Streets of Rage – Part 1

SEGA Genesis month continues with part one of a three part Streets of Rage series of My Life with SEGA episodes!

In this first part, we take a look at the game that started it all: Streets of Rage, also known as Bare Knuckle in Japan. Created as SEGA’s answer to Capcom’s Final Fight, Streets of Rage quickly overshadowed Capcom’s brawler, bringing us three fantastic titles that appeared on the Genesis/Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear, and on various compilation discs including the SEGA CD, Xbox 360, and PS3. Most recently, Streets of Rage appeared in the Nintendo 3DS 3D Classics series of games. But enough about modern ports, let’s look back at the cartridge that started it all (that’s your cue to press play on the video above).

My Life with SEGA battles it out in Cyber Troopers: Virtual-On for the SEGA Saturn

My Life with SEGA is back! A.J. is back! Mickey Mac is back! In our first episode since our team up in Rambo for SEGA’s Master System, it’s time to get our mech on in SEGA’s critically acclaimed arcade smash, Cyber Troopers Virtual-On for the SEGA Saturn! Released in 1995 to arcade’s by Sega AM3, Cyber Troopers Virtual-On is a versus fighting game featuring robots known as the “virtuaroids”, appropriately powered by Sega Saturns. Yes, sticking consoles on your protagonists was a thing even before The Typing of the Dead. The game was later ported to the Saturn, which is the version we’re putting to the test in this 2-Man Scramble. Who will come out on top? Watch and find out!

My Life with SEGA reviews the AtGames Genesis Console

For many SEGA fans, the Genesis was their first SEGA console. In North America, it was easily the most successful system released by the then 49-year old company. Sonic the Hedgehog made his debut on the 16-bit juggernaut, followed by a string of classics, such as Streets of Rage, ToeJam & Earl, Comix Zone and Vectorman…. just to name a few.

Now, 25 years later, the Genesis is now a cherished memory of our gaming history. Many of its games have ported to several current-generation gaming consoles, like the PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. In addition, there have been countless “cloned” Genesis consoles from RetroGen and AtGames. These are typically cheaply made, easy on the wallet, come with several built-in classic games and they’re fuckin’ EVERYWHERE! I’m not even kidding. I’ve found them book stores as well as Bed, Bath & Beyond. In fact, that’s where I purchased mine. Now, why would I buy one of these things? I have a CDX and a Model 1 Genesis. I certainly don’t NEED another Genesis. Why blow another $40 on something that undoubtedly wind up collecting dust in my closet? It’s simple, watch the video.

My Life with SEGA kills some time on the SEGA Genesis with “Time Killers”

Introduction by A.J. Rosa: When Strata’s weapon-based fighter Time Killers hit arcades in 1992, my brother and I soon monopolized the cabinet. It was funny, violent, gory and ridiculously entertaining. Being SEGA boys, we were itchin’ to see this bloody whore ported to the Genesis, or even better, the SEGA CD. Hey, that was our new toy, and we thought it was AWESOME!

By the time it landed on our favorite 16-bit hero, 4 years had passed. SEGA Saturn, Sony’s PlayStation and the Nintendo 64 were already duking it out. On top of that, Time Killers had been surpassed by other fighters. Unlike its contemporaries, such as Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, it didn’t receive an annual sequel to keep the franchise alive.

The “wait” is over. No Limits is the thrilling sequel to last year’s The Next Level, starring A.J. Rosa, Mickey Mac, Shawn Morgan and Alex Gonzales, with Jessie Wyrick.

My Life with SEGA battles it out in Marvel Super Heroes for the SEGA Saturn

Marvel Super Heroes was Capcom’s follow-up to their equally successful X-Men: Children of the Atom fighting game.

Like its predecessor, Marvel Super Heroes shares much in common with Capcom’s prolific Street Fighter series with over-the-top anime-style action, combo system and so on. While the arcade game was first released in 1995, console gamers wouldn’t receive a home port until late 1997 on Sony PlayStation and, of course, SEGA Saturn.

The Saturn version is fantastic. The animation is like an explosion of color that’s very faithful to the arcade original, with an energetic soundtrack and kick-ass sound effects. Now that Lauren’s joined the League of Extraordinary Dorks, I feel it’s high-time I make her suffer for NHL ’94.

FUN FACT: The American version is the one and only game outside of Japan that supports the RAM cartridge. To learn more about this delightful peripheral, check out the episode of My Life with SEGA dedicated to it!

This week on My Life with SEGA, we’ll be exploring Opa-Opa’s very first adventure in the Fantasy Zone.

Fantasy Zone is one of many titles brother insisted on buying for the Master System. It was so strange and other-worldly. Fantasy Zone was unlike any other he shooter he had seen before. While the gameplay is similar to something like Defender, that game was nowhere near as colorful and cheerful. I can’t remember ever seeing this fucker in the arcades, so I thought this was a Master System original for many years….

My Life with SEGA loses some teeth playing NHL Hockey ’94

SEGA’s Mega Drive is now twenty-five years old, and hockey season’s in full swing. What better way to celebrate both than playing NHL Hockey ’94? None!

Now, I’m not much of sports fan, so I own very few sports related titles. However, I have NHL ’94. Why? Well, my brother and I used to play it. A lot. He wasn’t much of a hockey fan either, yet we loved this game….

This week, I share that love with my sister-from-another-mister, Lauren Buckler. Mickey Mac will return. I promise. Until then, it’s the girl’s time to shine.
