Sonic Mania has been out for a few months and while the game got physical collector’s edition, the game itself was never available in a physical medium. There is still a pool of gamers that are hoping SEGA does a physical version of the game and that might be happening. Earlier today, the ESRB twitter account posted a updated ESRB rating for Sonic Mania. If you look into the replies, someone already asked what we are all thinking: Why re-rate a game that has been out for months? ESRB’s reply:

When the ESRB account was pressed more on its reply, it said they don’t know if Sonic Mania is going to be released physically and that they only rate games. But they did say that all physical games need a ESRB summary, which is why the rating had been updated. We could be seeing a physical version of Sonic Mania, at least on the Nintendo Switch. Would you buy Sonic Mania again and if so, how much are you willing to spend on a physical version of the game?

Update: According to Sonic the Hedgehog social media manager Aaron Webber, this ESRB update actually has to do with the Collector’s Edition. Still not adding up why they would update the ESRB summaries months after the game released.

Sonic Mania PC to launch with bug fixes coming later to consoles, encourages modding

Tomorrow the Sonic Mania PC version will be coming out and fans that have waited might be excited to find out that the PC version will include new bug fixes that haven’t appeared in the console versions. Not only that, Sonic Mania PC version will encourage modding, unlike rumors that have been spreading since the game was delayed. The rumor was that SEGA held the PC port back so they can add protection against modifications.

According to Sonic Mania PC’s Steam EULA:

“SEGA encourages its users to express their creativity and enhance the experience of our games through the creation of modifications (including but not limited to new items, weapons, characters, models, textures, levels, story lines, music and game modes) for use with the Product (“Mod” or “Mods”)… and users that create Mods”

As for Sonic Mania PC supporting Steam Workshop, it seems that is not the case. According to Sonic the Hedgehog PR guru, Aaron Webber, there are no current plans to support Steam Workshop. If this is something that is important to you, I suggest you write a 180 character tweet over to Aaron and let them know how you feel!

See the new Sonic Mania stage Mirage Saloon Zone and Tails & Knuckles in action

SEGA has granted YouTube channel Kinda Funny Games the exclusive reveal of a new Sonic Mania stage, Mirage Saloon Zone, as well as our first look at Tails and Knuckles in action as well as the Sonic & Tails mode. Interestingly, the new zone is very reminiscent of Desert Dazzle, a scrapped original zone that Taxman had planned to include in the remaster of Sonic CD. There are several easter eggs and fun visuals that can be spotted in the new zone, including a Fang the Sniper wanted poster and pinball flippers that resemble bird heads. We also get a look at the CRT filter which, to be honest, I’m not that big a fan of.

Give the video a watch and in the comments below, sound off on the new zone!

Sonic Mania Collector’s Edition announced

Sonic Mania Pre Order

Sonic Mania is having a lot of love put into it by literally being a game for the fans by the fans, but SEGA is taking it to the next level by introducing a special Collector’s Edition. The package itself comes in a deluxe box with artwork based on the North American release of Sonic the Hedgehog, a Sonic statue on top of a model 1 SEGA Genesis with a special SEGA chant if you flip the switch, a Metallic Collector’s Card that contains a download code for Sonic Mania, and a cast with a gold ring shaped like a SEGA Genesis cartridge.

The package is available on Amazon for pre-order in North America for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, all for $69.99. No word if PAL or Asian countries will receive an equivalent. Note that despite Amazon listing the game for a May 31 2017 release, it’s a placeholder date and the game still has a tentative release window of Spring 2017.
