Rare hires design chief from SEGA West

Simon Woodroffe has been in the gaming industry for 20+ years working on titles like Simon the Sorcerer and Call of Cthulthu. But if you frequent this site, you probably recall his name from his work at SEGA, including working on titles like Renegade Ops and Sonic Generations. Simon Woodroffe is ready to move on and took the position of Creative Director over at Rare.

“Simon’s vast experience and knowledge are a fantastic addition to Rare’s strong Design team. He has worked on many innovative titles over the years, including some really impressive R&D prototyping projects. He is a terrific all-rounder and the ideal person to head up our Design department. Rare is committed to making the best possible games experiences that inspire everyone to play, and we believe the best way to do that is to attract the brightest and best talent in the business.” – Rare’s senior studio director Craig Duncan.

Its always good to see people that work on SEGA move on to bigger studios to work on more games.

Steam has Renegade Ops on sale for a little over $5

That is correct, Steam right now has Renegade Ops on sale for $5.09, that is 66% off its regular $14.99 price point. If you have been waiting for awhile to pick this game up, this is the sale you want to pounce on. Not only that, the game is part of Steam’s “Great Gift Pile drawing“, basically you buy the game during the sale, unlock a specific achievement and get into a drawing to win another free game. Brilliant strategy by the guys behind Steam to get you to buy more games.

For the more hardcore, you can still pick up SEGA’s complete pack for $99.99. This includes all of their Steam games.

Edit: Deal is now dead

Renegade Ops Accolades Trailer

Sega just wanted to remind you how good Renegade Ops was, so they made this accolades trailer! Pretty sure this is exactly the same footage as another trailer just with quotes spliced into it… But hey, why not? It does a good job of showing off what Renegade Ops is all about, driving around and blowing stuff up!

It’s a brilliantly fun game that reminds me of classic top down shooters of the 90’s like Jackle and Desert Strike except in beautiful HD graphics, online play and four player co-op. If you haven’t already got it, go treat yourself it’s on PSN, XBLA and Steam and its well worth it.

Renegade Ops vehicle pack coming to PSN next week

If you bought Renegade Ops back in September, as part of Sony’s PLAY Program, you should be getting messages on your PSN about the upcoming Vehicle Pack add-on.

I assume this vehicle pack will later be released on Xbox Live and for the rest of the PSN users that didn’t buy Renegade Ops the first week it was out. But as of right now, no news.

SEGA Five: Why I’m Glad to be a SEGA Fan

Here in America, we just finished celebrating Thanksgiving and went through hell with Black Friday. Now I’m sitting here putting together a list of why I’m glad to be a SEGA fan this year. It seems that SEGA hardly gets the credit they deserve for some of the things they do, but when they do something wrong everyone notices. So why am I a SEGA fan?

Renegade Ops makes PSN best selling titles for September

Renegade Ops came out on September 13th and already made the list of the top 20 selling PSN titles for the month. The bad part? It came in #17 and was outsold by some older software.

Renegade Ops has gotten pretty good scores and we here at SEGAbits loved it. SEGA has stated that if the game sells well, there will be more games in the series.

If you want to see the full list of best selling titles, click here.

Gordon Freeman joins Renegade Ops on the PC version

So Renegade Ops has been out on console for awhile, while the PC version isn’t going to come out until October 14th. Don’t worry, PC users will be able to drive as Gordon Freeman’s Buggy. Is this exclusive to PC? That has not been established yet.

“Working with Steam and the Half-Life team makes this game extra special. Gordon Freeman is a deeply-established character in the gaming world and we are proud to have him included in Renegade Ops.” – John Clark, director of PC Digital

If you play as the Freeman, you will be able to unleash Antlions as his special power. So if you use Steam, there’s a big chance you’re a Half Life fan and if you aren’t, you should be.

Review: Renegade Ops

Gameplay is Renegade Ops‘ strongest point. (Which feels like it should be a given, considering it’s a videogame. In this day I often get the feeling gameplay takes a back seat to plot and graphics, as it attempts to pretend it isn’t a game we’re playing but an interactive movie.) For me, gameplay always comes first, because I like my games fast, fun, action-packed and challenging. I’m happy to report that Renegade Ops has all of these qualities in spades.

Renegade Ops Video Previews from IGN and Gamespot

Today, IGN has shown a hands-on preview of Renegade Ops. They showcased the many different characters and vehicles in the game. Meanwhile, Gamespot got an interview and long demo of the game. I’ll admit, I overlooked this game completely at E3, but once I got a hands on at the Sega Arcade during Comic Con, I was sold.

Renegade Ops will be available in September. Click “Continue Reading” for the Gamespot video.
