Rumor: Sonic 4: Episode 2 not fixing physics complaints

We got an anonymous tip from a fellow reader that has actually played Sonic 4: Episode 2 and his opinion on the title wasn’t a positive one. He stated that the game uses the same physics from the first episode.

“I have obtained access to a prototype build via the Xbox Live PARTNERNET program, and what is concerning is that the physics are exactly the same as they were in Episode 1. Yes, letting go of the stick makes Sonic drop like a brick. The reason I am telling you this information is that if it is out in the open, the fans will have a chance to speak out and make Sega delay the game. I am worried if it is left too late Sega will push out yet another disappointing software product.” – Anonymous e-mail

Some fans didn’t seem to hate the new physics, but many did. We have more Sonic 4 information that he leaked, we will be posting something everyday, so come back when you can. Hopefully we can get some screenshots as well.

Edit: Put rumor in the title after some sites started running the story as a fact. This is a rumor and has been filed under rumor since I posted it.

I’d be shocked if it were already in a playable state and on Partnernet. I’m gonna be very hesitant in believing this, if true. Partnernet was the reason for the last leak.

  2. teirusu says:

i dont care about the physics i just care about the game beign released soon

  3. Barry the Nomad says:

Shadzter over at SOnic Stadium reminded me that a some months back Ken Balough stated that they aren’t changing the engine for Ep 2. So this could be legit.

    • George says:

Yeah, makes sense. Doubt they are as well. The emailer said he was going to send videos or photos. So we’ll see.

Makes me wonder though, can’t physics be changed within an engine? So same engine does not necessarily mean same physics? Honestly, simply allowing Sonic to continue movement when you let go of the pad would be enough for me.

No New Levels Names? Something About Metal Sonic? Tails?

  5. Ethan Kerr says:

I’d like to believe this guy, but I just can’t take his word for it. :/ Not yet. There has to be more visual proof than what is provided.

  6. Kori-Maru says:

If the rumors are true, their probably testing it or messing around with it like they did with the emulated version of Sonic CD.

  7. Zoyous says:

Barry, in answer to your question, yes physics can be changed within an engine.

  8. CrazyTails says:

Honestly what happened in the 90’s is the only thing that has kept sonic alive for such a long time. If that was never the case, sonic would have been dead.

If this turns out to be true, then someone needs to shoot some of them idiot staff over at sonicteam. Episode 1 was allready pushing it, but this after all the given feedback, hearing this bullshit….

Ah you know what, screw it. We’ll see

  9. hello says:

I refuse to believe that they would completely ignore all the negative feedback they got for episode 1. If so then SEGA frankly deserves the backlash they will get for doing so..

  10. DarkFailure says:

I’m dying to get some footage of it. When can we expect the additional information you were speaking of?

  11. Conk says:

Be interesting to see how this develops.

  12. Sharky says:

Crazy Tails why are you spazzing out about Sonic Team again?

Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations were both pretty great games… Developed by Sonic Team.

Sonic 4 Episode 1 and I’m sure Episode 2 are developed by Dimps but you know that… I believe that with the promise of the words ‘Episode 1’ that Sega pretty much had to make at least one other episode, not to mention it sold well enough to warrent a sequal. Now you can see in Episode 1 that the overworld map seems to link up to a second set of stages so you can assume those are for Episode 2. If the game links in such a way then they can’t just go and change the engine. If it bothers you, why not just ignore it and play the GOOD Sonic games we’ve been getting?

“Crazy Tails why are you spazzing out about Sonic Team again?”

I do not think he is spazzing out, just stating facts. If Sonic started on the Dreamcast, the series could not take Sonic Heroes, Shadow, Silver, Black Knight and all the other terrible things that occured in that time span.

Also I do not see why they cannot make changes to the engine, the game will be played in two seperate parts in any case and it would have attracted more fans if they fixed the physics issues. As it is on all the platforms it released, Sonic 4 just sold over a million. Create a proper high quality platformer and watch that number swell dramatically.

As for this information, not sure what to make of it, if the issues are not fixed I will probably give it a miss.

  14. Jak Saward says:

Please could you tell us one of the level names?

  15. MatrixEvolution17 says:

I think that since this was the prototype the physics were probably a little undeveloped, I hope they use the physics that they used for Sonic Generations 3DS, I’ve heard that they were pretty good.

  16. -nSega54- says:

I don’t understand what “the maps connecting” have to do with Sega being unable to fix a broken physics system. DLC for a game like Gears of War connects seamlessly to the previous content while fixing balancing issues, etc. I don’t see why this would be an issue.

  17. Box says:

This is obviously BS. Sonic Generations 3DS uses the same engine as Sonic 4, why would they go back to using an earlier engine after updating and improving it?
