[SEGAbits at the GDC 14 event]

SEGA legendary developer Yu Suzuki is set to deliver a postmortem on Shenmue at this upcoming year’s GDC. GDC says that the creator will be talking about the classic game for the first times, starting from its origins as a Virtua Fighter based RPG for the SEGA Saturn all the way till its release in 1999. But that isn’t all, Playstation 4 lead system architect and game designer Mark Cerny will be translating the presentation! I guess that was what talked about last year?

Sadly for people like us that aren’t invited or can’t make it to the the event, good old GameSpot will be live streaming the event, so we don’t miss on any ‘surprise announcements’. So, who’s excited?

      It’s doubtful that there will be any news. I think he’s just going to talk about the development of Shenmue and Virtua Fighter.

      How many games, well, there aren’t may like Shenmue, but how many big-budget games have been announced at GDC?

      I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

    Hype train here we go!

    Doubt it, the use of the word ‘postmortem’ suggests that he will be explaining everything about it and why it could not ever be finished. It seems it’s simply cost far too much money.

    Which makes you wonder, because Shenmue is now coming up to being 14 years since it’s grand debut, and in that time, many other franchises have come and gone, many over taking it in terms of scope graphically and size of depth, though in that time, no other series has been able to give that depth of realism in the sense that every single NPC has their own live, voice, character, name and daily schedule.

    So that’s probably one of the cost issues along with the massive amount of licenses that Sega would have to re-track down a well.

      Also, for anyone interested, the ‘ShenmueDojo’ channel has just uploaded for the first time ever, a full English translation of the ‘Project Berkley Disk’ (Shenmue’s Project name).

      You can find this on the channel now, titled;

      ‘Yu Suzuki: Project Berkley – English Subtitled – (15 years)’
