5 Things an All-Star Racing 2 MUST Have

2010 has come and gone, and with it came a slew of excellent SEGA games. I won’t list them off as I’m certain every reader here knows all the great titles that released. However, I do want to point out one of the releases that made it into my top ten games of 2010 list: Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing. When first announced in 2009, many let out a collective “meh”, and rightfully so. Up until that point, Sonic spin-off titles have ranged from terrible to good, but never great. SEGA Superstars Tennis, the predecessor to All-Stars Racing, was a good game. However the roster was lacking, the mechanics needed polish and the mission mode was a bit unforgiving.

SEGA France sends out Sonic 20th anniversary anti-aging cream

Check it out, SEGA France has sent people Sonic 20th anniversary branded….. anti-aging cream. Yes, so basically no hints on the upcoming projects. I guess this is suppose to suggest that this is Sonic’s secret in looking so young. I thought 20 years old was considered young?
I don’t know, making sense out of anything the French do is too much trouble. For some weird reason I want one of these.

Yuji Naka’s new game might come west as ‘Rodea the Sky Soldier’

Yuji Naka’s latest adventure game with Prope has been announced in Japan, it is called Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea. But that name is not very good for a western port, not at all. So the publisher, Kadokawa Games copyrighted the name ‘Rodea the Sky Soldier’ in America.

The odd thing is Kadokawa Games doesn’t have a US branch. This game might be brought over by another publisher, maybe NIS America or XSeed.

Have some screens and art that the publisher released in their latest press conference in Japan.

Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Arcade machine spotted in the wild

Seems that the previously reported rumor of SASASR receiving an arcade version was legit! From the website Arcade Heroes comes photos and a few details about the racing cabinet, officially titled Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Arcade. The machine(s) were spotted at a Chuck E. Cheese in Skokie, IL. The tipster noted that the seats and sides of the cabinet change color. The startup mentions Sumo Digital as the developer and the game retains power-ups and boosting. The game features three modes: Time Trial, Quick Race and Grand Prix. Also, the game is running on the Ringwide hardware. No mention of the roster, but I assume it has exactly what the console versions have. I wonder if Metal Sonic also appears?

Check out an additional photo at the Arcade Heroes link below.

SEGA games in Famitsu Top 100 2010

On a yearly basis, Famitsu publishes the top 100 best selling games and as always, SEGA manages to make a few on the list. Although in terms of total, it’s not overly impressive, SEGA still maintains a strong position and suffers from far fewer financial failures than recent years, they managed to get 7 games in total and no prizes guessing which was the biggest seller for SEGA.

17. [PS3] Yakuza 4 (Sega) – 557,771
32. [PSP] Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 2nd (Sega) – 341,663
40. [PSP] Kurohyou! Yakuza New Chapter (Sega) – 264,766
49. [PSP] Keion! Afterschool Live (Sega) – 231,976
61. [PS3] End of Eternity (Sega) – 184,662
74. [PSP] Valkyria Chronicles 2 (Sega) – 153,487
89. [PSP] Shining Hearts (Sega) – 130,258

Another entry in the Yakuza series and again continues to slightly push up from sales of Yakuza 3 (Which did around 509,000 with the original release, not accounting THE BEST release which did a further 80,000) and Project Diva 2 improves on the sales of the original in a big way (Which managed 186,000) and becomes the 22nd most successful game on the PSP in Japan. The PSP Yakuza title does a modest amount, matching that of the sales of the original release of Yakuza Kenzan, indicator of the userbase in terms of sales for the next spinoff title perhaps?

K-On does very well for SEGA although I would imagine that would be it’s final total outside of a re-release in Japan, I can’t quite see it coming out in America or Europe. Valkyria Chronicles 2 does ever so slightly better than the original (8,000) but this does not include the re-release of the original title which nothced up a further 82,000 unit and the sales of End of Eternity certainly suggests a sequel maybe forthcoming.

Finally Shining Hearts, despite doing 100,000 in it’s first week, ends up with a modest extra 30,000 and it does seem that perhaps despite the impressive first week opening, it may not go down as the most successful and I can probably imagine a sigh of relief from dissatisfied fans of the franchise.

Yuji Naka’s action game called Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea

Yuji Naka has teased this action game before, and now in the latest issue of Famitsu he goes into detail about his latest creation. The game will be called Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea, and like we already know, it will be sky based. The story will be written by Takumi Miyajima (Tales of Symphonia/Tales of the Abyss).

The game will let you take to the skies and shoot enemies, and it’s also said to feature ‘non flying levels’. Even though Yuji Naka originally teased this as his ‘HD action game’ it is actually heading to the Wii/3DS. So another Nintendo exclusive.

Enjoy the scans! Game is being published by Kadokawa Games, not SEGA. Just to let you guys know.

Crush being ported to the 3DS? [Update]

Crush is one of the most underrated SEGA published games this generation. It was released on the PSP and received no hype, which is too bad. It is a great game that EVERYONE should play.

It seems that SEGA will give the franchise another chance, posted at GoNintendo, SEGA will be porting the PSP title to 3DS. I think that Crush would be prefect for the 3DS, with its touch pad and 3D visuals. Filing it as a rumor till we get a SEGA go ahead that it’s official.

We have been told by SEGA that this is indeed true, no press release or details to share right now.

Super Monkey Ball 3DS Announcement Trailer

Check out the western announcement trailer for Super Monkey Ball 3DS! The trailer is all CGI and highlights the three games that will feature in Super Monkey Ball 3DS, classic Monkey Ball rolling, Monkey Fight and Monkey Race. There also seems to be a new bad guy on the block!

I’ve been a monkey ball fan since the first game but I’ve avoided the series since Monkey Ball Deluxe. This is due to the direction the series has taken, using the party games as more of a gimmick to show off a new control scheme instead of focusing on what’s important. Making fun, fleshed out games.

Super Monkey Ball 3DS seems to have returned to the ‘quality over quantity’ notion, and Monkey Fight and Monkey Race, two of my favourite party games, have returned,  although they seem to have new gameplay mechanics. But unfortunately my favourite party game of the lot, Monkey Target is absent!

Pakistani McDonalds Ad Featuring Sonic Heroes

Kotaku Wrote:

You may have seen these cheap LCD games offered as McDonalds Happy Meal toys before. They’ve been run in several territories around the world. But you’ve never seen them advertised like they were in Pakistan.

Back in 2004, what must surely be one of the world’s least popular McDonalds outlets tried a unique method of selling the Sonic games: making an animated commercial that looks like it was made by a 12-year-old. In 1994.

Oh, and Rouge the Bat is naked. Creepy.

I have a few of these McDonald games still lying around (they were given away free with Happy Meals, I suppose that is the drill across the world), I don’t remember seeing this advertisement though. The advert has surprisingly poor production values and is entirely the fault of McDonalds, since SEGA has no presence in our country. This commercial marks the first and last time a SEGA game (or endorsed) product was marketed and distributed in Pakistan.

For Kotaku’s information, McDonalds is comparatively more popular in Karachi than it is in America, I am not sure but we definitely have more than 20 McDonalds outlets in my city alone.

Conduit 2 trailer shows off weapons

Seems that the weapons for Conduit 2 will be a mash up of other weapons found in popular FPS games, not that this is a bad thing. We have a gravity gun looking weapon and the “see enemies & shoot them behind walls” gun that was in Resistance 2, might have been in more games.

I thought the game was out next month but it seems to be delayed till March. This game best be awesome.

Some awesome looking custom SEGA consoles

What is better than a SEGA Genesis and Dreamcast? Custom ones that feature your favorite franchises. Here are four, all by the same artist. If you want to check out his site, click here.

Wish he would have done a custom SEGA Saturn, but this is pretty awesome.
