Sonic Colors hasn’t sold 1 million units in the US

Nintendo Power has released a list of all the software that has sold over a million copies in the US. There are many titles that we knew where going to make it. The best selling Wii game? Wii Play sold 13.04 million units. Impressive.
SEGA only had 2 games make it on the list. Yes, you guessed it. Mario & Sonic at Olympic Games (2.12 million) and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (1.34 million). Sadly Sonic Colors did not make the list. That means that the game, so far, hasn’t broken 1 million units in the United States.

Damn, that sucks! Lets see how Sonic Generations performs on the PS3 & 360. Hit the jump for the rest of the list.

What a horrible list for top selling games. Reminds me why I hate the Wii and anything associated with it, like Nintendo. and the 3DS

Regardless, Sonic Generations HD is gonna sell much better. SEGA is pimping the game everywhere and letting people know that Sonic is back. Their latest trailers have also improved a lot, compared to the older ones they were making.

  2. teirusu says:

thanks god that the wii its not getting sonic generations and the 3ds yes

  3. CrazyTails says:

    @shadi

everyone knows sonic sells best on nintendo platforms so I would rather be cautious as the game may sell worse on the HD consoles despite all the advertizing.

  4. Sharky says:

Further proof that Wii gamers are a bunch of asshats. Sonic Colours was just a good Sonic game it was a very good platformer in general. Far better than most games on that list.

  5. Taro Yamada says:

What’s really interesting is that if we discount games that came bundled with a piece of hardware then Just Dance 2 is the third best selling Wii game.

We really should discount the ones that came with the fancy-dancy controller additions, with the exclusion of maybe the Mario Kart wheel.

  6. Aki-at says:

Will side somewhat with CrazyTails. Not sure how anyone can take this as any kind of evidence, selling a million alone in the US is hard as it is, even Sonic Heroes did not manage that on one format (And that game sold around 6 million!) and CrazyTails is right, the best selling format for Sonic is on Nintendo platform after Sonic Heroes (Secret Rings sold over 2 million, Sonic Rush sold over 2 million, Sonic Unleashed Wii sold more than the PS3 and 360 version combined)

I would also like to add Sonic’s popularity has dipped massively in America thanks to quality decline, one good game will not change anything, they would need a series of them.

  7. Sonic has not really been a big seller in the US as of recent, right? So this isn’t too surprising. However, how many copies sold in Europe?

I think with the Wii, it comes down to the Mario Galaxy titles taking away from sales. I see moms and dads going into Gamestop all the time and asking for “the best (insert genre here)” and the employee more often than not points to the big Nintendo franchise to fill the void. “Well if you want a great RPG, go with Zelda. Platformer = Mario or Kirby”. Rarely have I heard a SEGA title get recommended.

  8. Sega_Portuguese says:

Actually, not just the Sonic Colors, but if im not wrong, except the Genesis Era, SEGA never sold well in USA. Master System sold nothing, Saturn too and the Dreamcast, well, i dont like to remember…

  9. GrantX360 says:

Well apparantly Sonic Colours sold approx 0.5 million in the states. This is very weak really and is just shy of a million total. It’s a big suprise because unleashed has unoffical figures of 1.8 million worldwide. I would put this partly down to recession. Partly down to the weakening Wii and growth of HD consoles.
Sonic Unleashed actually sold 4 million across all formats. I’d settle for that with Generations especially without the Wii…

  10. Shigs says:

Since it’s only showing U.S. numbers, it’s hard to say how well the Sonic games are doing.

I’m surprised frankly, since Sonic merchandise seems to do well here and Sonic X is still showing in reruns 3 times on saturdays.

  11. Aki-at says:

Never ever believe VGChartz. There is no proof for their data and multiple games have inflated numbers, see Valkyria Chronicles from one of SEGA’s own.

Although people must keep into consideration that Sonic games are long sellers, they start slow but they keep selling, this is what pushes them into million sellers without people noticing.

  12. Arc Christelle says:

    @Sega_Portuguese

Despite the decline of the Dreamcast, it was actually a pretty successful console, too successful in the U.S. It’s God-Tier. The Genesis actually did pretty decent too. Things that may have lost battles would be the rushed Sega Saturn and Game Gear, despite its advantages over GameBoy, I guess Gameboy was a more familiar name. The battles of marketing can lead to some unexpected ends despite quality.

  13. matty says:

^Not just Sonic games being long sellers, but games published on the Wii in general, at least that was the case for a while. It’s hard to really pin down when titles are most hard hitting on the Wii as some titles are a slow burn while others are pretty much DOA.
On top of that, I’d think people may be holding off on Wii titles in anticipation of the WiiU.

Still, the biggest push for games is the first week a game is released, and then the month is observed on how well it did. I’d take it that even if the chart list may be dated a bit to calculate the numbers, it doesn’t look like any changes are going to be made.

@Taro Yamada: Aren’t they counted separably anyway since they are listed in a different SKU? Some bundles may not apply, maybe like the controller/game packs, but ones bundled with consoles I think are different since some don’t even have a barcode on those. (Well, that’s what I noticed on PS3 and 360 games bundled with the console. Not sure about Nintendo.)

  14. sth88 says:

    *sigh*

Just goes to show you how far we’ve got to go to get Sonic back to prominence. We keep fighting the good fight and hope for the best, that’s all we can do.

  15. -nSega54- says:

Did Sonic Unleashed sell 1 million on either the PS3 or 360? I doubt it.

Combine it with the sales of the DS version and Colors definitely topped 1 million, which is pretty good for a spinoff that was marketed childishly and that was simply (sorry Sharky) a *good* not great, Sonic game.

Shadi: I didn’t think you even liked the game much, don’t know why you’re so upset at these numbers.

  16. ShadiNeko says:

@nsega, i liked sonic colors, but yeah. it wasnt my favorite sonic game. but im glad at these numbers, because that means SEGA obviously thinks Sonic still sells on other systems =P I dont wanna buy junky Nintendo just to play Sonic

  17. teirusu says:

its ridiculous that sonic colors hasnt sold a million and that stupid super mario cralaxy sold 2 sonic colors its one of the best games on the wii

  18. fernandeath says:

wow, there’s no sonic game at all in this list.

  19. unknown says:

how did wipeout get on there!? It’s horrible

  20. Body PRESS says:

Games for kiddies, games for casuals – as expected.

  21. -nSega54- says:

“its ridiculous that sonic colors hasnt sold a million and that stupid super mario cralaxy sold 2 sonic colors its one of the best games on the wii”

lol both Mario Galaxy games are about 10 times better than Sonic Colors, sorry man.

  22. Body PRESS says:

Only if you’re a fan of 3D platformers that lack a second analog stick to provide a good camera system, in a game that takes place on small spherical worlds where the controls are often rendered inaccurate and judging distances can be difficult due to the aforementioned horrible camera system, causing reported headaches, motion sickness, and disorientation in people who play the game.

So if you’re a fan of bad cameras, bad controls, and bad headaches, then yes, Mario Galaxy is the better game. Otherwise, Mario Galaxy is an extremely overrated title whose main novel concept (the spherical platforming worlds in space) was already done by Ratchet and Clank years prior, only with better camera control.

  23. -nSega54- says:

None of those problems you describe there even crossed my mind when playing the Galaxy games.

You wanna talk flawed platforming, take Sonic Colors, whose slippery controls made its focus on 2D platforming a nightmare at times.

Good game, but overrated in the Sega community.

  24. teirusu says:

mario galaxy its a horrible game the people think that its great because nintendo and his propanganda but i agree whit body mario galaxy its a extremly overated game

  25. -nSega54- says:

lol Well it’s your opinion and you’re certainly entitled to it, but damn…

Anyway, Sonic Colors certainly took its share of cues from the Galaxy games, so it’s funny to see all the hate against them from Sonic Colors fans.

  26. radrappy says:

Haha Colors better than galaxy? I love Colors as much as the next closeted sonic fan but please, don’t be ridiculous.

  27. -nSega54- says:

    ^YES! Thank you.

Finally someone with some sense. (Kidding. Sort of.)

  28. Aki-at says:

You’re all wrong, Sonic Colours is not that good to me, its the new Sonic CD in terms of how overrated it is.

    Now we’re speaking sense.

  29. radrappy says:

yeah and unleashed is the new sonic and knuckles! Nope, unleashed sucks, colors was good, mario galaxy 1 and 2 are amazing.

  30. Aki-at says:

“yeah and unleashed is the new sonic and knuckles! Nope, unleashed sucks, colors was good, mario galaxy 1 and 2 are amazing”

I did not claim that in regards to a, denied b and did not even get involved in the discussion with c and d.

Got the wrong end of the stick mate, better luck next time trying to put words into people’s mouths!

  31. Sega Uranus says:

I agree with Aki. Sonic CD was for years the most overrated in the series, although still quite good the fans really blew it out to be something much more than it was. The same is true with Sonic Colors. A good game for sure, but not a particularly impressive or high quality one in any regard. Sonic Generations will crush it, as will likely most upcoming Sonic titles.

I do not know why people are all gloomy over this news. The million mark in just one region is really not that important, especially on a platform that was on it’s last legs early last year as far as third party publishers go. Because it does not focus on motion controls or anything like that, a future port would be simple to do.

It is also worth mentioning that the budget was not too high either, especially considering spinoffs, Secret Rings had a much higher budget.

Another point is that this was one of the first Sonic titles in awhile that dropped in price very slowly. Of course very cheap sales came up every now and then, but stuff like Sonic Unleashed was already being sold everywhere for 35 USD by the end of the 2008. Because of this it likely made more money than some previous games did.

  32. teirusu says:

i have a question why are you to all that says that sonic and knuclkes was an overated game why are you doing here this is a sega fan website i f you love so much nintendo go and sign in nintendo forums

  33. radrappy says:

    @aki

words in your mouth? You’re one of the crazies who preferred unleashed to colors if memory serves. I might have exaggerated the degree to which you regard it, but you preferred it none the less.

    @ Teirusu

Being a fan of something doesn’t mean you dislike something else by default. I happen to appreciate nintendo greatly, thank you very much. There’s no point being stuck in the 90’s when it comes to what companies you choose to like and dislike.

  34. -nSega54- says:

“i have a question why are you to all that says that sonic and knuclkes was an overated game why are you doing here this is a sega fan website i f you love so much nintendo go and sign in nintendo forums”

Haha dude Sega’s definitely my favorite video game publisher but that doesn’t mean I’ll always blindly follow what they do or ignore what great work other studios do. I’d miss out on some of my favorite games, which may not necessarily come from Sega.

I certainly like Sega better than Nintendo but the Mario Galaxy games were fantastic. Far better than Sonic Colors, though I’ve said this in the past, I thought Sonic Unleashed was (to me) on their level; I loved that game.

I play Sega games for one type of experience and Nintendo games for another. SEGA doesn’t have any games that are even close to the experiences given by the likes of Super Paper Mario or Legend of Zelda. They just don’t.

And Nintendo doesn’t have any forums. :]

  35. radrappy says:

wait what? You thought unleashed was on the same level as the galaxies?

  36. Aki-at says:

“words in your mouth? You’re one of the crazies who preferred unleashed to colors if memory serves. I might have exaggerated the degree to which you regard it, but you preferred it none the less”

If you get so offended by someone not sharing the same opinion as you, then don’t bother entering a discussion. Especially if it causes you to throw baseless accusations at other posters.

The fact I preferred certain elements does not equal, or anywhere near for that matter, me saying its on the same level as Sonic & Knuckles. I have made it known I dislike both Sonic Colours and Sonic Unleashed a number of times. What I liked over Sonic Colours was the level design felt closer to Sonic levels (Though since I have to explain everything now, closer does not mean closely emulating, just not as far away in design as Sonic Colours) but this was for a select few stages, Spagonia and Arid Sands, for example. Of course I’d still expect much better level design than we found in either game.

To say I like Sonic Unleashed to the point of comparing it to one of the finest platformers ever made is laughable. And to say I liked Sonic Unleashed overall to Sonic Colours would be rather strange, the werehog segments took over more than half the game, why would I prefer to play what I expect from a high quality under 10 licensed game? Next you’ll be calling me a Sonic Team fanboy.

The fact is, I find neither game as good as either fans claim it to be.

  37. radrappy says:

Well it’s good that we clearing that up then. I must have read your thoughts out of context because I distinctly remember you praising Unleashed while criticizing colors. I’m not sure I’ve ever read you saying anything positive about colors even though you claim to have disliked them equally. I’m going to have to call you out on Spagonia and Arid sands. They were terribly designed levels (yes, the day stages) with trial and error gameplay that was a chore to play. Both contained lengthy automated sequences and the game was too fast to even begin to be able to focus on actual platforming or precision gameplay. The only daytime levels in Unleashed worth touching were mazuri and apostos but even those were sloppy. So many people get so caught up in Unleashed’s visuals and adrenaline to see that the daytime gameplay was horrid.

Colors was such a step up from Unleashed, that it’s depressing to see generations revert to the Unleashed model of gameplay. I’m not offended by a different opinion, but I will be assertive when someone is suggesting something absurd. I expect people to do the same, which is why we’re even having this back and forth.

  38. -nSega54- says:

“wait what? You thought unleashed was on the same level as the galaxies?”

I loved Sonic Unleashed, thought it was an incredible platformer and it made my list of Best Games of 2008. Fantastic game.

I wouldn’t say it was as polished as the two Galaxy games but I gave all 3 of them 9/10 scores.

  39. Aki-at says:

“Well it’s good that we clearing that up then. I must have read your thoughts out of context because I distinctly remember you praising Unleashed while criticizing colors”

I have not criticized Sonic the Hedgehog 4 either, does not mean I do not like it. The fact is I hardly complain about games much, even if I dislike them greatly. I have probably complained relatively little about Silver the Hegdehog, does not mean I do not want the game erased from history. Add to that I do not want to end up debating stuff with Sonic fans, its a reason why I do not talk too much in general about the seires.

“I’m going to have to call you out on Spagonia and Arid sands. They were terribly designed levels (yes, the day stages) with trial and error gameplay that was a chore to play. So many people get so caught up in Unleashed’s visuals and adrenaline to see that the daytime gameplay was horrid”

There was a few moments of trial and error (And a lot of boosting) but I would not say that leads them to be worse designed levels than in Sonic Colours, stages such as Sweet Mountain and Starlight Carnival (And Asteroid Coaster) were terrible, I only got any real enjoyment from Planet Wisp.

The platforming in Sonic Unleashed was better too, but this is mainly down to the better controls. Sonic Colours was such an travesty that they had to include a double jump, just to help players with the problem with the controls. I could even concluded the same with Sonic Colours, after all the sparkling light and fantastic music, the fact it was not a downright bad game made people like and apperciate it more for what it is and I say it was bad.

“Colors was such a step up from Unleashed, that it’s depressing to see generations revert to the Unleashed model of gameplay. I’m not offended by a different opinion, but I will be assertive when someone is suggesting something absurd. I expect people to do the same, which is why we’re even having this back and forth.”

I do not think it is absurd, nor depressing, to suggest one form of gameplay is superior. At the end, a well designed level is what matters, City Escape modern was a nicely designed, not excellent, level. I hope for better, but we will see in less than a month’s time.
