Guardian Heroes port to be handled by Treasure

When Guardian Heroes was originally announced for XBLA, many were wondering who SEGA was going to contact to handle the porting duties. Some, like I, assumed that due to the fact that it was going to be an XBLA exclusive, that it would be handled by Treasure themselves. The first screenshot though had many wondering and believing that Backbone, a company that has enjoyed numerous porting duties from SEGA, had earned the job. However it has been revealed by Siliconera that Treasure themselves are working on the port, so those who wanted the original developer can rest assured that Treasure themselves have returned to port the SEGA Saturn classic title.

Round Table: Our favorite thing about the Yakuza series

We are bringing you this week’s round table early, to celebrate the closing of Yakuza week. This time we are talking about one thing we love about the Yakuza series… while Cube_b3 lists everything he hates. What a negative Nancy.

If you guys liked what we did for Yakuza week, tell SEGA about it. I’m sure we can do this for more games if there’s positive feedback.

SEGA Reigns Supreme at Smithsonian’s The Art of Video Games

Remember a long while back when we were asked, as video game fans, to vote on the most influential games to be featured in the Smithsonian American Art Museum The Art of Video Games exhibit? Well at long last that list has been revealed and SEGA fans will have plenty to be happy about. Check out the full list here, in PDF format, and after the jump check out the SEGA games featured in the exhibit.

Guardian Heroes coming to XBLA [now with screens]

It seems that the SEGA Saturn classic, Guardian Heroes, is heading to XBLA with new HD graphics. So far only an XBLA version has been announced, perhaps an indication that the port itself is handled by Treasure?

The XBLA version boasts some new features including online multiplayer and new HD graphics!

  • Action-RPG Brawling: Choose one of five heroes to level up and guide along a branching storyline with five different endings.
  • Friends, Foes, and Fighters: Play the game’s Story Mode alone or with a second player, or challenge Versus Mode with up to 12 players at once.
  • Extended Gameplay: Time Attack Mode, Arcade Mode, Arrange Mode and more allow players to explore every nuance of 45 different fighters.
  • Fully Re-Mastered: All-new graphics and visual effects bring the classic to life in a completely high-definition, widescreen presentation

[UPDATE!] – The ‘HD’ filter is OPTIONAL, rejoice!

Rumor: Nintendo only Sonic game incoming? [update]

[update] Seems like some sources have changed or the lack of sleep really got to me. The game is NOT teased as ‘Nintendo developed’ but as being on a ‘Nintendo platform’. 95% sure this will be the Sonic 3DS game. [/update]

Nintendo fans have been complaining that HD users are getting Sonic Generation, but those Nintendo only users might have their own exclusive title to look forward to!

According to Eurogamer Portugal, the next  issue of Nintendo Power (the E3 edition) is going to reveal a new Sonic game exclusively for a Nintendo platform.

Why you should own this game – Day 6 –Reason 6

There are no other games like it! Yakuza is a one of a kind game, in fact it is a game made up of multiple games. Besides the fantastic main story driven game you can easily spend hours doing the sub-games found all over the city. Be it running the Hostess bar, training your fighters or heck even just playing darts or in the batting cage. There is even an arcade in the game where you can play slot machines, claw machines and a Shoot-em-up! Every game is fleshed out and a full game in its own right.

If there is one game that is close to Yakuza, it’s the master piece that is Shenmue and even then they are worlds apart.

Renegade Ops Teaser Trailer Incoming!

The first video of SEGA and Avalanche’s Renegade Ops arrives by way of a short, but f***ing sweet teaser trailer! What more, IGN answered a few questions about the game:

  • Top down perspective
  • Minimal storyline shown through comic book-esque panels
  • Game is described as a mix between A-Team, GI Joe and Micro Machines
  • It has multiplayer
  • It has a summer release for Xbox Live Arcade, PSN and PC Download

I think it looks awesome. What do you think?

SEGA trademarks “Samurai Blood Show” [updated]

[“The white waves, the red clouds.” is what the bottom says]

SEGA has filed this trademark for both Europe and US. The US version didn’t have an image, this one came from Europe. See, it’s French on the bottom.

Description from US trademark: “video game software; computer game programs; computer game software; video game discs and cartridges; game programs for mobile telephones etc.”

We could possibly be seeing this on consoles and not just some obscure arcade game. It could also be a name change for the western release of Chaos Code. Though that game doesn’t seem very “Samurai” oriented.

[updated] This is going to be the western release for this iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad game.

SEGA releases Virtua Tennis 4 (PS3) Commercial

SEGA has released what looks like the North American TV commercial for Virtua Tennis 4, which they’ve posted to their blog and on Youtube.

Just in case anyone’s confused, yes, this is actually a multiplatform game, though you can’t tell it from the commercial.

UK Charts: Virtua Tennis 4 debuts at #23

Virtua Tennis 4 debuted this week at #23 on the UK charts. The game was only tracked for one day, so it isn’t a bad debut. We will have to see what happens next week. The 23rd spot is the all format charts, so it puts together all releases.

Individual charts they ranked:

  • Xbox 360: #24
  • Playstation 3: #13
  • Nintendo Wii: #27

Is it surprising that Virtua Tennis 4 preformed better on Playstation 3? Not really since it did have extras on that console, I guess PSN being down didn’t effect consumers’ choices too much. At least in the UK.

Sonic joins Namco’s Taiko No Tatsujin Plus

Sonic the Hedgehog has had his fair share of crossovers in the blue blur’s lifetime. Two of the most iconic have been the Mario crossovers, which include the Olympic titles, and Super Smash Bros Brawl. This time Sonic and its music will be featured in Namco’s upcoming drumming game Taiko No Tatsujin Plus.

So out of all the Sonic games that they could have picked to feature tunes from, which title did they end up choosing? Sonic 4: Episode 1. Ah, most likely just a crossover to promote their downloadable title.

Takio no Tatsujin Plus is an iPhone/iPad game. So it’s a good way to cross promote.

Why you should own this game – Day 5 –Reason 5

Any long time Sega fan will notice that there is something uniquely ‘Sega’ about the Yakuza series. It’s hard to put your finger on what makes something a ‘Sega styled game’, you could be playing Panzer Dragon Saga or Jet Set Radio, two completely different games, and yet you’ll know both have a very Sega feel about them. Weird!

It could be down to the music, one of the things Sega rarely fails to impress with. Or it could simply be that the Yakuza series has game play elements reminiscent of other Sega series. I wouldn’t blame you for being reminded of the Shenmue games or even Streets of Rage whilst playing Yakuza. Not to mention Yakuza games are littered with throwbacks to other Sega games, like music tracks, that only the most hardcore of Sega fans would spot. Or… Perhaps it could be that Sega characters have a disproportionate hand to face to ratio? The hands are always massive. (Anyone else noticed this?)

But whatever it is, Yakuza is undoubtedly a Sega game, and if you’re a Sega fan (and I suspect you are as you’re on Segabits.com) then Yakuza 4 is simply a must.
