Today Reddit learned that the “SE-GA” voice at the start of the Sonic the Hedgehog took up 1/8 of the cartridge space

Did you know that the intro “SE-GA” chime that we all love took 1/8th of the cartridge space? If you are a regular here, you probably already knew this. If you visit Reddit’s /r/TIL subreddit you probably saw this post and now you are seeing my blog posts regarding that blog post. Inception.

So 1/8th of the space? Totally worth it.

So the famous “SEGAAAA” jingle took up more space than an actual stage or even an act within the game? lol, Hard to believe.
I did read about this some years back, an interview with Yuji Naka who was talking about this particular subject, he said that originally, Sonic was supposed to be a breakdancer in the first game and that they originally prepared an intro animation for him doing break dancing moves, but due to the limit size of the carts and the “SEGAAA!” jingle, they couldn’t add it in for lack of memory space.
I think the interview is online now somewhere on the Sonic Stadium site, is was when they were asking him about Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis in US).
    Very interesting.

  2. Oh Reddit, learning things long after they’ve been known. Still, it’s a cool fact.

  3. Dubba814 says:

Is it the same for other SEGA Genesis games or just Sonic the Hedgehog?

    Cool fact by the way!

  4. SkyBlue says:

So basically the Mega Drive cartridges had more space then people have to believe?

That does relate to SEGA’s “If Nintendo make an A Title, we will make 3 B-Titles” motto of the past.

As putting in a single for the Sonic games would sell more units then having more space without the jingle.

what are you talking about, idiot?

pretty much everything you learn was “already known”

99% of the time when anyone or any group learns something, it’s something that was already known.

you thought what you said had any meaning whatsoever but it was as meaningless as “reddit. learning things that they are learning”

    i hate you.

  6. This jingle actually first originated on the company’s Japanese TV commercials for their game consoles, going back to as far as their first machine, the SG-1000, released in July 1983.
