Shinobi 3DS developer faces layoffs

Griptonite games, makers of Shinobi on 3DS, Captain America on DS and many other portable games is hitting some tough times. The company, which has recently been aquired by Glu Mobile has had to make some cutbacks in order to maintain revenue. In this report from IGN, Glu Mobile CEO Niccolo de Masi gave the following statement.

We believe concentrating resources on fewer titles, with a greater centralized support infrastructure will accelerate revenue growth in Q4 2013 and beyond. We made over 20 new ‘games-as-a-service’ (GaaS) hires in Q1 and anticipate hiring at a similar rate throughout the year. Our goal is to shift headcount investment out of raw studio team volume and into our centralized GaaS functions. This rebalancing is expected to leave R&D costs approximately flat year over year. A reduction in force was commenced today to promote talent density throughout the studio, as well as fund over 80 new GaaS colleagues. This reduction is equivalent to circa 12% of the year’s starting headcount of 564 employees. Adding back forecast hiring we anticipate finishing 2013 with 582 Gluers worldwide.

good riddance that game sucked. I dont know how they even look at anyone in the face after the way they destroyed that franchise…

The game was a disgrace to the Shinobi name.

  3. Nux says:

The game was a lot of fun and one of my favorite 3DS games, in my opinion. It’s a shame this happened to them…

Goodness! Some real negative comments! The game wasn’t my favorite Shinobi title, but it was far from being a disgrace. It was quite fun, and I don’t think it’s fair to say “good riddance” when people lose their jobs.

  5. Kori-Maru says:

The game was in fact enjoyable and had tons of classic gameplay elements for fans of the series, it’s far from being a disgrace.

Mad **** talking. Shinobi 3Ds doesn’t compare to the classics, but in no way does it resemble a “bad game”

Shinobi 3DS was alright. It wasn’t amazing like I had originally thought, but I had fun, worth the $20 I spent.

I actually was under the impression that Griptonite was dissolved, so this is interesting to see. If you guys look at the the GameFAQs board for Shinobi 3DS, self-alleged Griptonite people who worked on the game have responded to some player comments. Here’s one topic

It’s totaly not on par with the classics and Shadowdancer, i’m sick and tired of the Strider wanna-be main characters in the past 10 years, Joe, Hayate and Sho were just fine with their looks, anime is not “cool” since 1998 …. but it’s totally not the worst one in the series. Worst one is Cyber Shinobi BY FAR! ….

Too bad, they did an incredible job on Shinobi 3D. The best side-scrolling Shinobi game, and one of the best Action-platformers in recent years.

    Really hoped for a sequel.
