New Head of Xbox Phil Spencer says gamers want Microsoft to bring back Shenmue

Phil-Spencer

Following his recent appointment as Head of Xbox at Microsoft, Phil Spencer spoke with Polygon about his ideas for the future of the brand. Regarding his leadership, Spencer promised that “with me you’re going to get a focus on gaming first and a best platform to play games on.” When asked about what games he receives requests for, Spencer named the Shenmue franchise as the biggest request Xbox owners ask Microsoft for. Spencer jokingly referred to it as “the big Shenmue contingency.”

A new Shenmue isn’t on the horizon just yet, but it is good to know that people like Phil Spencer have the franchise on their minds thanks to the efforts of fan campaigns. Help out the #SaveShenmue campaign yourself by heading over to their site and spreading the word.

Actually, we don’t. This whole gaming generation, this eight years of dumb down games for mindless sheeple are disgusting, nobody wants to see Shenmue with life-regen, lens-flare crap, and chesthighwalls. And specially nobody wants to see Shenmue in the DRMbullshitBOX. I rather stay true to SEGA even if today they are a bit crappy, i rather wait with the spirit of Segata Sanshiro, until finally the Dreamsmashercrusher Mk VII comes true (avaible for Xmas in 3010).

God no.. I don’t want to buy an Xbox One

    BTW DON’T GET ME WRONG
I am happy that the game has a chance of coming out no matter what console it’s on.
I’m not a fan of the Xbox One but if that’s the only chance it has so be it!
    and congrats to all the Xbox One owners that will be able to play it ;-;
(again if all this happens and it does come out on it)

“…Want Microsoft to bring back Shenmue”?

Last time I checked it was a Sega IP.

The Xbox would be a terrible choice for the franchise, a Youtuber made a video explaining why.

It has terrible performance in Japan, so it would be certain suicide foe sure in that major territory.

He said ideally, the Dreamcast would be the no.1 choice, (games still get made for Dreamcast, even in 2014) but it’s obviously unlikely, too good to be true.

The only other system that was reasonable for it that would ensure the project still had a fair chance of doing well was the PS4, Shenmue was the most requested game on the system along with Yakuza 5 in a Sony held poll too, so they’d have to have talks with Sega no doubt to let them know.

Shenmue has always sold better in the West.

Good move putting Phil Spencer in charge.

  7. They should release Shenmue by chapter episodes on all the major consoles, downloadable. Then just keep it going.

    • Gen says:

They did that already, Shenmue I was Chapter I, each game was originally supposed to be it’s own chapter.

When development on Shenmue II commenced in 2000, they tried to cram as much in as possible, which unfortunately meant cuts in the story had to be made, like the boat journey from Yokosuka to Hong Kong for example, Shenmue II then became Chapters 2, 3, 4 and part of 5.

“God no.. I don’t want to buy a Xbox One” —> exactly what I was thinking! I don’t like the idea of exclusive titles on different platforms!
